 Re: External hard drive recommendations

I just bought a 1TB Hewlett Packard Simple Save Ext HD for $120 on sale at Best Buy that lived up to it's name as it was very user friendly. Simply plug it in and backing up my files was pretty much one step and easy.

I've had HP desktops and laptops and I swear by them. Never had problems with any of them and I abuse the hell out of my HP work laptop that I travel with.

I have a 1TB external that is made by Lacie. Both my brother and uncle have the same one as me and none of us have had any issues.

 Re: External hard drive recommendations

You might want to consider a network attached storage drive. That way, you could access your data from wherever you have internet access. This is helpful if you have a laptop you frequently move around. These can be found from 120-170 for a 1TB model.Comment

 Re: External hard drive recommendations

I just bought a Toshiba 1TB for $80 at BJs. Unfortunately, my brand new pc's hard drive **** the bed(well, is ****ting). It started having SMART fails at around the 40 day mark. I JUST built this pc, with that drive brand new. Grabbed the Toshiba, and I got all the files on it quick with my eSATA connection.Comment

I have a western digital and its been a trooper, probably 3 years old now and running fine.

For a little more money than the WD you can get a Seagate, which is not just a name you pay a premium for, its an extremely solid external harddrive copy with the lowest fail rate.Comment

Another vote for WD. I have a 1.5 TB that works very well. It was $99 on Amazon with no taxes and free shipping. Considered getting the 1 TB for $75.

Also have a 1TB Fantom Drive that I got from newegg. It was $100 after a mail in rebate. Works well too.Comment

 Re: External hard drive recommendations

I am looking at getting an external hard drive to put music and word documents on. Will 500gb be enough and is there a certain brand that is better than others?

Thanks in advance for the info.Comment

 Re: External hard drive recommendations

With the prices dropping, I wouldn't get anything less than 1TB. You'll probably pay in the neighborhood of $65-75 for 500GB when you can get this 2TB (4 times the storage) USB 3.0 with 3 year warranty for $85 shipped:
