ESPN 3D will showcase a minimum of 85 live sporting events during its first year, beginning June 11 with the first 2010 FIFA World Cup match, featuring South Africa vs. Mexico, ESPN and ABC Sports president George Bodenheimer announced.

No idea. THe article didn't really say anything and this is the first I've heard of it.

I'm pretty interested in seeing the actual plans for how this is going to work, as well. Will we have to go out and buy glasses? Will they send them to us for a price? Etc.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think you'll need a set capable of displaying it, along with 3D glasses. It'll be the same type of technology that Blu-Ray is gonna use to go 3D at home. I just don't know the exact specs required for a TV and what will do this all ready.

You need a 3d ready TV, a cable/satellite provider with the channel, a 3d capable set top box, and 3d glasses.

The real question is going to be is any provider going to provide the channel and are they going to have boxes that can display it.

Didn't the Chargers and some other NFL team play in 3D within the last year or two? I remember something like that.

I wonder how much it really adds to the experience. Honestly, I really don't have much experience with watching movies and whathaveyou in 3D, but they've never seemed to add too much to it in the few things I've seen in 3D. In theaters (I've yet to see a movie at a theater in 3D, only at home) it may be cool with the huge screen and sound, but at home, even on a 50+ inch television, I never got a big rush. I think surround sound systems add much more when the sound literally surrounds you then some things popping off screen.

I sure as hell ain't going to a theater to watch the game.

I don't know if you really need anything more than 3D glasses. You can buy movies on DVD and Blu-Ray that are 3D. My Bloody Valentine comes to mind. That was in 3D and all you had to do was put on glasses.

3d ready tv's are coming out this year, so the industry obviously needs to have content available to push adoption. It'll still be very much a niche product though, and I'm sure ESPN knows this. I just wonder how long it'll take them to get the autostereoscopic 3D TV's down from their $25k price tag.

Starting this year sometime, the 3D on most blu-rays will no longer be the anaglyph type that require the red/blue cardboard glasses. They have created a whole new spec for Blu-Ray to get the full color HD stereoscopic 3d that we see in theaters now.

You will need to get a new 120 hz HDTV that also accepts a 1080p/120fps input. These will also still require shutter glasses.

I really hate the idea of have to put on glasses to watch the tv. Movies is one thing cause you are sitting in one seat staring at the screen will little chance of getting up, but when I watch TV, especially sports, I rarely sit and watch every minute of the game.

The will be TV's that can do stereoscopic 3d without glasses, but it'll take a few years for the price to drop. The autostereoscopic 3d tv Phillips showed off will also have Quad HD 2160p resolution. It costs around $25k now.

Eventually, 3d just be a supported feature instead of something to solely buy a TV for. That's probably when most people will start to get these displays.

Until watching 3d without glasses is perfected (that could be decades away) this will be an epic fail. Not only will most refuse to wear glasses to watch this stuff but where are some of the cable companies going to get the bandwidth to transmit these images. They can't even do 1080p now and we are stuck with 1080i and lossless audio is a pipe dream at this point on cable. I seriously doubt anytime soon that many cable providers will overhaul thier entire infrastructure to appease 3d fans.

It's a gimmick of bored manufacturers who want people to buy shiny new tv's next Xmas to keep thier profit margin high. It didn't work before and it won't work now even if there are 5 more Avatar movies made and they all make a gazillion dollars. It will end up going the way of laserdiscs and SACD. Are you going to have to buy dozen's of glasses in case you have friends over who want to watch TV and all thier heads are different sizes?

I saw an SI writer (I think his name is Michael Heistand?) on TV today who described watching a football game in 3d quite a nauseating experience and found that wearing the glasses upside down actually made it look better and less sickening.

The ironic thing is if we put half the effort into things such as medicine and making cars that are environmentally friendly that we do in the tech industry with all these gadgets we would have cured cancer and all cars would be electric by now. Kind of sad how misguided our society is sometimes with what they consider important.

DirecTV is already on board with 3D.
