I didn't see these in the thread, so forgive me if I missed them earlier.

            The Godfather II
            Citizen Kane
            Metropolis

In bruges is one of the best dark comedies ever, and most have never seen it.

Re: Movies you absolutlely MUST see.

Everyone has to watch the Indiana Jones movies at least once in their life. Same goes for my favorite horror movie of all time, Nightmare on Elm Street. Freddy Krueger is one of the only horror movie villains that has character and charisma. Jason doesn't, Michael Myers doesn't, only other one that comes to mind that does is Charles Lee Ray, other wise known as Chucky. Which brings me to my next movie, everyone should check out Child's Play 1-3 at least once, even if you don't like horror movies much, it's part comedy too.

I mean, go ahead and like them if you want, but those aren't exactly cinematic masterpieces.

It's a must-see film, but not because it is one of superior quality. Anything but, on the contrary.

If you want a truly great horror villain watch Psycho. Anthony Perkins is nothing short of masterful in that role.

To keep things going, I'm going to call out the epic Chinese war film Red Cliff. Amazing battle scenes and an overall amazing story.

1939 is considered the GREATEST year in Hollywood history, when a movie like Of Mice and Men doesn't get any awards you know it's a once in a lifetime year.

You list some really good movies there. I can't remember if they were mentioned or not but one should also check out the original Scarface and Little Caesar. (The latter of which is one of the very early forms of the gangster film in terms of style and form) There are a ton of movies from teh Golden Age that I think are worth watching at the very least for the historical perspective but most of the truly great ones are must watch on their own merits.

I don't know if it's been listed yet, but 'Silence of the Lambs' is a must see. Anthony Hopkins is brilliant in it, to me that is his best work, and one of the better acting performances in recent memory.
