    The Daily Show is the New SNL

    This is a statement my friend proposed about a year ago, and I really had never thought much of it until Ed Helms' appearance on Conan O'Brien's show the other night.

    The Daily Show really has produced some big time stars. I don't know if they're producing at the same quality as SNL did in the '70s, early-mid 90's, and early 2000's, but they've produced some big time players in the entertainment world.

    Ed Helms, Steven Colbert, and Steve Carrel are probably the most obvious. Those guys are/are turning in to big stars in the comedy world.

    But Mo Rocca, Rob Riggle, Demitri Martin, Rob Corddry, and John Hodgman (The "PC") are all alumni and were all prominent players on the The Daily Show.

    (And Louis Black continues to have a segment.)

    Plus, right now, Wynatt Cenac, Aasif Mandvi, John Oliver, Samantha Bee, and her husband Jason Jones all show potential to have big comedy careers.

    Regardless of whether you like The Daily Show or not, you have to respect the talent it has helped produce.

    Louis Black is one of the best comedians out there other than Mitch Fatel

      Can't forget Aziz Ansari. Another reporter for The Daily Show. Really talented people, and it has definitely produced some comedic talent as of late.

        I'd probably like to make the arguement that In Living Color probably created some of the big(gest) box office stars:
        * Jim Carey
        * Jamie Foxx
        * Jennifer Lopez
        * Kennan Ivory Wayans (directs & produces countless movies)
        * Wayans brothers (Damon - Marlon - Shawn)
        * David Alan Greyer
        * Tommy Davidson

          Consider this: Many of the stars that are on SNL and other comedy shows, including Colbert, TDS, Conan and the Office, had began their careers with improv comedy troupes such as The Second City and The Groundlings. That includes many of the folks that you guys have mentioned. So I wouldn't say that The Daily Show is the new SNL, unless if you're considering them as the "new" second step on the comedy ladder.

            Uh, that's pretty much exactly what I'm saying.

            I realize these guys aren't getting their starts on SNL or The Daily Show, but those are the programs that are propelling them to stardom.

              I gotcha. You mentioned "talent it has helped produce", so I assumed that you might not have noticed what all of these guys have in common.

                SNL put out big names like that in three different time periods.

                Late 1970's - Early 1980's
                Dan Akroyd
                John Belushi
                Chevy Chase
                Bill Murray
                Gilda Radner
                Eddie Murphy

                Early 1990's
                Dana Carvey
                Chris Farley
                Tim Meadows
                Jay Mohr
                Mike Myers
                Kevin Nealon
                Chris Rock
                Adam Sandler
                Rob Schneider
                David Spade

                Early-Mid 2000's
                Jimmy Fallon
                Will Ferrell
                Tina Fey
                Chris Kattan
                Tim Meadows
                Tracy Morgan
                Amy Poehler

                I understand In Living Color didn't run that long, but it's kind of silly to argue that it put out bigger stars than SNL did.

                  I wouldn't exactly consider Kattan, Meadows, Schneider, or Nealon big names,

                    True. I was on the fence with Kattan, Meadows and Nealon, since none of them had huge success after SNL, but Schneider has starred in a couple of notable comedies (Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo, The Hot Chick, Benchwarmers) and has appeared in tons of other known comedies (50 First Dates, The Longest Yard, Grandma's Boy, I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry).

                      When I hear "big name" I think of a guy who has starred in successful movies and and has been a main character. Outside of the first three movies Duece Bigalow is the only successful one and the rest of the movies he had bit parts, essentially because Sandler always puts his boys in his movies.

                        John Oliver will be a Huge Movie Star at some point in his Career. He is easily the funniest person on the Daily Show, I love it when he does his news.

                          Re: The Daily Show is the New SNL

                          It is a New York show. The comedians only have to work once or twice a week (they can do all kinds of other work in between appearances).

                          SNL is more of a commitment. That is a big difference I see.

                          But I do agree The Daily Show is pretty damn good and the best critique of the fourth estate out there.

                            Since when was Olivia Munn a "journalist" on the show? I saw her tonight and didn't know if it was a one off thing or she's a new cast member. Does this mean that she's done with AOTS or will she do both?

                              I hope they get rid of her. I didn't think she was good. At all.

                              Could be because I hated her before she came to TDS, but still.
