Anyone who understands the Oscar process, please explain...

How in the H E DOUBLE HOCKEY STICK Avatar gets nominated for best picture but The Dark Knight did not.

I'm failing to understand the logic...

because they expanded the field of nominations from 5 to 10.

It certainly pisses me off. Not to say The Dark Knight would have won, but it should have been recognized.

I saw every 2009 Oscar-nominated movie except The Reader, and I can honestly say that Slumdog Millionaire is acceptable as the winner, but not for the other 62 awards it won. One place TDK got shafted was for best musical score because Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard accepted equal credit for their composition, rather than one of them taking at least 70% (an AA requirement).

It's just a shame they decided to expand this the year after TDK, but of course most of us know that the only reason they did expand it was because of TDK.

Honestly, WALL-E should have gotten as Best Picture nom as well.

Which, following your TDK logic, is probably why Up! was nominated. I saw it, and it was excellent. Probably the saddest opening 20 minutes of any animated move ever.

          Very true.

If Avatar wins best picture, it will be a sad day for Hollywood. But Titanic won it and it was even worse than Avatar.

Yeah - it'll be a sad day if a good movie wins the Oscar... How tragic.

The only reason they expanded the # of Best Pictures nominations is $$$$$$$

(Ads for the next 2 months - go see Movie X, it was nominated for Best Picture).

a lot of it has to do with tv audiences dwindling over the years. They're hoping to bring in younger crowds with the nominations of other great movies that younger people liked (avatar, up, etc)

                Los Angeles Dodgers
                Los Angeles Lakers
                The UCLA Bruins

And I'm moving to Chicago so...
                The Green Bay Packers!

No movie should win. The whole idea that one of these great movies is factually better than the other is flat out stupid. There were a bunch of great movies this year, and that's that. The idea we have to try to put one above all the others is just plain stupid; it comes down to personal opinion in the end anyway, it's not like winning an award really makes something better than something else.

I agree. The real "award" I think is that they are nominated. All the nominations for the oscars are recognition of great work for that category.

Tell that to all the youth sports leagues that no longer keep score.
We are moving away from the "winning is everything" way of life.

Back on topic I have no problem with Avatar being nominated, it was one of the best 10 films I have seen in the last year. Now if they could just get one of the main stars to tragically die everyone would think it is a great movie.

If this is a shot at The Dark Knight (how can't it be?), I can say that I understand where this argument comes from when you look at the entire nation, but this definitely didn't affect me in a positive way one bit. In fact, I think I'm even more pissed now, because now Ledger can't be used for Batman 3. In fact, his line when hanging upside down means nothing now. I almost cried in the theater when I heard it.

The Dark Knight goes far beyond Ledger's performance and his death. For me, it was all about Christopher Nolan (who unfortunately doesn't get any Best Director nods, but hopefully will with Inception this year if it holds up).

TDK is good, but not nearly as good as many place it.

I'm shocked Up wasn't nominated for best picture nor Star Trek. Both should have been in at least over Blind Side.
