[SlashDot]New Video of Challenger Disaster Surfaces After 24 Years

Dying Man Shares Unseen Challenger Video

"An amateur video of the 1986 Space Shuttle Challenger explosion has been made public for the first time. The Florida man who filmed it from his front yard on his new Betamax camcorder turned the tape over to an educational organization a week before he died this past December. The Space Exploration Archive has since published the video into the public domain in time for the 24th anniversary of the catastrophe. Despite being shot from about 70 miles from Cape Canaveral, the shuttle and the explosion can be seen quite clearly. It is unclear why he never shared the footage with NASA or the media. NASA officials say they were not aware of the video, but are interested in examining it now that it has been made available."

I was in elementary school when this happened.

I wanted to be an astronaut until I saw this on tv.

Everyone was stilled that day and in shock.

"That's some sort of historical moment we got here on tape I guess." You think?

Makes one wonder why he didn't sell this footage off day one.

It's crazy that it took this long for the video to come out. I was only 2 at the time, so I couldn't take much from the whole ordeal. However, Reagan's Challenger Eulogy has been something I have studied and gone over many times over the past few years.

I don't see this as being classless. Why is it that it's okay to send it to NASA now? Why do you think this video was uploaded on YouTube? Why was it posted on OS for all of us? It's not a matter of class, it's just a remembrance of history.

it was after the decompression that killed 2 of them. It was confirmed that the pilot tried to direct the shuttle in the ocean at an angle before going unconscious.

You asked why it wasn't sold from day one. Some people just don't do things for the money. Let's be honest here, in 1986 things were far different than they are now.

Same, I was in 2nd grade. I remember watching a special or two about the school teacher being a member of the crew earlier that year too.

We watched it in class and when it exploded and it was apparent deaths were definitely going to be involved the Ms. Merrit turned off the TV. One of the teachers next door came in and they talked about it outside, and I do believe she was starting to get choked up.

Perhaps I shouldn't have said "sold". I wasn't implying that he was searching for the highest bidder out there, I just meant that he would perhaps send it into CNN or something, and perhaps they would compensate him somehow at the same time (not necessarily per request).

Ya, that makes no sense. Has nothing to do with class. If anything, it's shows great honor that he didn't try to profit off of the disaster of other human beings.

Unless you meant just the opposite and implied that he did have class by not selling it....if so, sorry.
