Re: [SlashDot]New Video of Challenger Disaster Surfaces After 24 Years

i didnt fully understand it at the time... but I remember them talking about the school teacher McCaulife... was that her last name?

That was one of the major parts of the story. I dont remember any of our teachers showing us anything on tv or explaining or anything like that... I guess my school sucked.

I remember watching it on tv that night because my older sister had to do a report on it so she was watching it on the news over and over.

Its amazing how much more together people were at that time. If it were to happen today it would be talked about for a a day on every news network then they'd probably go into bashing Nasa the rest of the way.

I was in 5th grade when this happened. Still remember it like it was yesterday.

Sally Ride was the teacher's name.

I was in elementary school as well. My father worked for NASA for 25 years including the time of the incident. I was only 6 or 7 at the time, so couldn't understand the full magnitude of it, but it was basically like a family member had died around our house.

Well, Sally Ride was an astronaut... just not on the Challenger flight.

I was 5 when this happened. Another astronaut on the shuttle was from Akron. Judy Resnik. There is a nice memorial here for her.

Yeah, she was definitely famous in her own right...

In any event that day changed the way things were done in Nasa to ensure astronaut saftey. Hope to never see this happen ever again.

Man, that is incredible footage. I was in the USAF at the time, in Tech School at Chanute AFB in Illinois. We were lining up coming back from chow when some people in the Day Room said that the Challenger had blown up. There it was on the big screen. They had the closeup footage and everything. Needless to say, they cancelled classes. We went back to our dorms, where I had a little 13" color TV. I remember watching CNN all day and night, just shocked. I was an AF brat and grew up fascinated with Aircraft and especially the Shuttle. To see it going up in smoke and knowing they had died, especially the first Civilian, was just devastating. The Columbia was bad, but this was so much worse. It was just unfathomable. Thanks for sharing that 23.....

Yeah I remember Columbia and that piece hitting the side of the shuttle but the Challenger just stilled everything. Kind of unprecendented now. It was similar silence to the 9-11 silence because it was one of those things you just never imagine happening in the world, and then it just does.

Its tough man trying to explore outer space and all of the sacrifices that are made.

Tihs video should be in a history meuseum or something though.

The video was given to a NASA affiliated outfit after the videographer (for lack of a better term) died a couple years ago. Pretty crazy video and it's interesting how it took this long to surface when something like this would be up on youtube within a half hour.
