    Digital Camera Recommendations

Is it possible to find a real solid digital camera for between $80 and $130? Might any of you be able to point me in the right direction as to where I'd have the best luck finding an affordable camera that is still awesome?

Further, what is an awesome camera? My last camera, a hand-me-down, was ruined in a rainstorm and I'm just completely in the dark as to what would provide the most bang for my buck.

    You might like this thread:

I was searching for a camera with 60 FPS and could record in HD, and I found the perfect pocket cam that only ended up costing me $120 (w/o the tax), though it was $150 in price and I took $30 off with a Reward Zone certificate.

It's the Kodak Zi-8. Great little camera for a great price. Target had it last week for $140. In late March they're coming out with the next version, the Kodak PlaySport... smaller, more durable, better lowlight, waterproof (up to 10 meters), and sleeker design... only disadvantage compared to the Zi-8 is no external mic input, which was big for me.

I don't really have any other recommendations since I'm not very camera savvy, but if you check out that thread you'll see some of my HD videos.

Wow, thanks for the insight. I'll definitely have to give the Kodak Zi-8 a look in addition to surfing through the thread you provided. Much appreciated.

Just happened to see this article on Yahoo for the best cameras under 300...some are 150-180, but thought you might be interested even though it's a bit above your price range.

I also liked the dpreview site http://www.dpreview.com/, they have a lot of reviews/info and you can compare different cameras

Oh, you know what? I was assuming you were looking for a video camera like I was. That was my bad. You may be able to find something better if you're looking for something that can do more with pictures, like optical zoom, better image stabilization, have a flash, timer, etc. The Kodak is better suited for video.

That is indeed a timely article. Thanks for sending it down my way. I'm definitely going to delve into all this information when I get a little extra time here in the next few days (likely when I'm snowed in).

And Blzer, don't worry about it, I still appreciate the effort and will take your advice into account.

              Re: Digital Camera Recommendations

I personally always lean towards Canon. I think their optics are top notch, they have termendous low light ability and they seem to hold up over time better then any other brand out there. If I had to look anywhere other then Canon then it would probably be a Sony, only because I really like their Carl Zeiss lens, although Im not a huge fan of their low light ability and because its Sony, everything is proprietary and thus more expensive. After Sony I would check out some of the nicer Panasonic cameras but they can be more hit or miss. Now here comes my personal bias, I hate Olympus, Kodak, Fuji and Nikon (unless its a DSLR). Im not anywhere near an expert but like someone mentioned before, I would always advise using dpreview.com for info as its been a crutch for me many a times.

                Re: Digital Camera Recommendations

I'm going to bump this up.

I'm interested in entering the digital SLR market. I currently have Canon powershot S3 and while I love it, the megapixels are becoming dated and I'm wanting more (only has 6).

Are there any good dSLRs for around/under $700, or preferably under $500? I've noticed the Canon Rebel XS and that seems like a great camera for the price and what I'm looking for, but I would like more than one option. Any of you guys have any impressions or suggestions?

My brother just got a Nikon 3100 under 700 on amazon. Great camera and is up there in the best selling list. Very light weight and takes great pics.

Canon's are also solid so you can't lose going either one in that price range. No matter what it will look better than what you have now.

I myself have a Nikon d60 and love it, but the newer cameras will also have a camcorder feature.
