Does eBay charge monthly fees? (possible phishing e-mail)

I got this e-mail from eBay 20 hours ago.

    Dear member,

We are writing to alert you that your monthly eBay seller fees of $121.39 have not been paid for one of the following reasons:

    1. Your automatic payment method was declined

    2. You registered a new payment method after your monthly billing was already in process.

To continue to use eBay as normal and avoid collections, please complete the following steps:

    1. Make a one time payment on your account by following the instructions below. This will be used to pay for this months invoice.

    2. If your automatic payment method was declined, you will need to update your automatic payment method on file. We will use this to pay for future invoices.

If you still have additional questions, please use our Help system by clicking on the Help link at the top of most eBay pages. You may also click on the Contact Us link to send an email to Customer Support.

Please note - if your balance is zero, please disregard this message.

    Just follow these steps:
    1. Log on here http://www.ebay.com/payfees/
    2. Click the My eBay tab at the top of the page and sign in
    3. Click on the "Account" tab and then "View Invoices" to check your account status or the "one-time" payment link to make a one-time payment.

    Regards,

    eBay
I'm currently having issues linking my PayPal account to my bank account, but I never knew there was a monthly seller fee on eBay. If there was, I wouldn't have ever joined eBay.

If anyone can confirm or deny this, that would be great. Thanks. It seems too weird and like it could be one of those phishing e-mails, but I just wanted to be sure.

There is no monthly seller's fee. At the end of each month they collect "their cut" (roughly 4-6%) of what you sold all at one time. So if you don't sell anything there is no fee.

How much money did you make in that month?

I just opened a new account last Sunday. I put up four PS3 games for sale, and one of them sold last night. I tried to contact the buyer and find out how things will work in terms of payment if I can't get my PayPal account working, but he hasn't responded yet.

If they were getting 10% off the top, you would have to have sold about $1200 to rack up a $120 monthly charge.

Again, it totally depends on how much you sold that month. If all you've sold is 1 or 2 video games, I'd call B.S.

Yeah, the only thing I can maybe think of is that it's part of the deposit PayPal tried to put in my bank account, but failed to do (which is why I couldn't link them up). I'm not sure otherwise, though.

I don't think that ebay.com/payfees is even part of their domain.

Sounds like a scam but wouldn't it be easier to just log onto ebay and talk to a rep right away and actually get an answer from someone within ebay instead of a internet message board? My only explanation would be that you've failed to pay for many months while continuing to sell things thus racking up such a huge fee but I don't think ebay will continue to let you sell if you haven't paid your fees.

If you log in (without using that link) you'll see if you have a charge associated with your account.

If you don't, then don't worry about it.

                Thanks, guys.

Only reason I never called was because the e-mail didn't have a phone number. Then again...

You'll probably get asked to wire some money to Nigeria. They are getting better, it usually has a bunch of spelling and grammar mistakes.

The best advice is to type in the address or use your bookmarks to visit any site. Never click a link and then type in a password when prompted.

if it really says "dear member" in the original email, then it's a scam. Ebay always addresses you by name, along with your account name.

You can also check your account fees through the proper ebay site.

Fees can add up quite a bit, if you advertise on the main page or pages of the categories selected. But a normal add with a few pictures is only a couple bucks.

And they do have monthly fees if you have an Ebay store but most likely you never signed up for that if you were only selling a few items.
