    Amazon Kindle

I am definitely looking into getting one of these for my fiancee. They look pretty sleek and I read that it can hold up to like 1500 books! Does anyone here have a Kindle? If you do, please share your experiences!

Note: I am fully aware of Apple's upcoming device, so please let's not turn this into THAT kind of thread (bashing/praising). Let's keep it strictly on the Kindle. LOL

    Thanks

My sister in law has one and likes it. I don't really know much about it. It doesn't have a back light, so you will need to use an additional book light of some sort if you intend to read at night.

My boss has one and loves it, but more for the condensing of the WSJ, than for books, but she enjoys that aspect as well.

She has a hard leather cover for her's that, when you hold it, gives you a very similar feeling to holding a hard cover book. It's very user friendly to turn from page to page and when you shut it off, it holds your place (and I believe can hold multiple places if you share it with someone else).

Most NY Times best sellers are only $9.99, though I heard that might change as other companies are getting into the mix.

Obviously it's a better investment for someone that reads a ton. If you only read a few books a year, you probably would be better off just buying the books as you'll probably never recover the cost.

I also thought it would be perfect for someone who uses public transportation a lot (ex: to and from work). The size would make it convenient to carry in a laptop bag or a back pack.

I want to get one for my wife, but she reads a lot in the bathtub and I'd hate for it to get ruined that way.

Well she falls into the "reads a few books (6-10) a year" category. I was just thinking it would be something that she could keep for a long time and build her library up. Also, the cost of the e-books are like half of what a retail copy costs. It's almost like I'm being a techie for her lol! She's usually hesitant about embracing new tech unless it just blows her mind.

My local library is part of a collective that offers the ability to check out eBooks online...They use the Adobe PDF/ePub book format, something that Kindle (and Apple I think) don't support, but the Barnes & Noble Nook and Sony readers do. I think it's a format war of sorts, the ePub one is a open standard, but Amazon wants their own proprietary format.

I ended up getting a Nook and really like it. I can check stuff out for free, which was a dealbreaker for me. I'll be buying a few books for the Nook over time, but I don't really buy tons of books (usually just check them out of the library), so it's been good for me. You check books out online, use Adobe Digital Editions to download them to your computer, and then I just hook up the Nook (Adobe recognizes it, so I can then drag the checked out books to the reader).

I do enjoy reading with it instead of a real book, I can just keep it in the leather type case I got for it, balance it on my stomach while i'm in bed or something and just hit a button to turn pages.

I'm willing to bet the Kindle's a bit better of a product (though I love my Nook), but since I couldn't use the library's free online system it wasn't an option for me.

            Re: Amazon Kindle

I've been using the iPhone Kindle app and while that's not the same as the real Kindle, if I love using it then I would imagine someone would love reading from the Kindle.

I really thought I'd miss the idea of having a book, but I'm finding that the positives out weight the negatives by a ton. No need for physical bookmarks, easy flipping, all-in-one tool to have with my phone (so less things to carry around), means I can read anywhere (no bringing the big book along to meet someone at the theater).

I love it. I'd like to actually get a Kindle, but the app does the job just fine too.

I bought my wife the Sony Reader (the smaller one) and she loves it. The Kindle is more expensive and bigger (iirc) and she likes that she can easily put it in her coat and what not. Suffice to say I was big sweetie for getting it for her.

I was just about to say that the Sony Reader is a pretty good option as well.

I'm not sold on a Kindle. It's just that it's all I hear in relation to e-readers. Never knew Sony had one. I had heard of the Nook though.

Here's the Sony one. Options are good. Sony has those.

Sony's good too, more options in content like the Nook...which of the 2 you like better is a matter of personal preference.
