You don't have to wait long.

In 2009, the movie was in production and will be released in 2011.[9]
Unlike previous film adaptations of television series from the 1980s, the movie will not render the main characters in CGI. According to Cory Edwards' blog, Gerry Parkes will not reprise his role as Doc, the American human character, for the movie.

            More on that:
On Who Will Fight Who In The Film: "When he moved onto Battleship, rather than having two human forces, one is an alien force, and they needed designing and concepts doing. I'm currently doing costumes for the aliens and their head-gear. I've also been doing a lot of key-frames of environments and events."

On Peter Berg's Vision: "Pete's got such a great sensibility, he wants stuff to be raw and real and aggressive and frightening and hard and tough. There are different characters in the alien race that will have different service to the film, but generally they are totally new. Not really harking back to anything, but more trying to give Pete what he wants and what he's trying to achieve."

On Merchandizing Possibilities: "Something struck me after working on this for a few months - they are going to make a new version of the game with the aliens and the alien ships. There's a folder online and that's for Hasbro, so some action figures of what I've designed would be kind of cool!"
Not surprised that Hasbro will jump on that for more money too. I dread a future where kids know Battleship as the game between humans and aliens. Sigh...

Rumor has it that Michael Cera (Arrested Development, Super Bad) is in talks to play the title role of Gilligan.

There's already a live action/CGI Smurfs movie in the works.

What's the chances of a guy naming some random show from the 70s or 80s and its all of a sudden made known that its in the works already.

                        This is really sad.

I think this is how studios run their weekly meetings at this point.

                          FADE IN:

INT. MAJOR STUDIO - CONFERENCE ROOM - DAY

Five studio execs sit around a conference table.

                          EXEC #1
We made a lot of money last year.

                          EXEC #2
                          Not enough.

                          EXEC #3
Couldn't we try to make more?

                          EXEC #4
I was waiting for someone to say that.

                          EXEC #3
What do you suppose we do?

                          EXEC #2
Those guys on the east coast adapted a best selling novel and made a hit out of it.

                          EXEC #1
                          We should have done that.

                          EXEC #4
                          I told you so.

                          EXEC #2
Wasted resources if you ask me.

                          EXEC #1
I'm not creative enough to think of something else.

                          EXEC #3
That reminds me, do you remember that time [insert infamous 80's character's name] was trying to [insert typical dilemma] and had to find a new, creative way to resolve a conflict we've seen many times before on network television?

                          EXEC #2
                          He always found a solution.

                          EXEC #4
                          I noticed that.

                          EXEC #1
                          I loved that show.

                          EXEC #2
They could have made more money out of it.

Silent for most of the conversation, EXEC #5 suddenly rises from his chair.

                          EXEC #5
Why don't we make a movie based on that television show?

                          EXEC #2
The audience's connection to it would make it an instant cash-cow.

                          EXEC #1
I think that would be wonderful.

                          EXEC #3
Why didn't I think of that?

                          EXEC #4
I was going to suggest the same thing.
