    Digital Converter Box Question

I have a question before I send someone to spend $.

Someone I know moved into an apartment and the apartment already has "free" cable. Don't know how but the cable cord still has some juice. Comcast is the provider.

If they bought a digital converter box from someone other than Comcast, what would happen? Would everything work fine? They don't have TNT so I don't even want to be over there since the NBA Playoffs are about to come on.
    Concrete evidence/videos please

What happened is that the previous owner probably didn't cut off their cable at that address. It usually happens when someone moves but it can be turned off at any time. It happened with me in the 1st apartment I moved in. I would cross my fingers every time I turned on the TV.

Any digital converter box will work.

How long did your cable stay on after you moved in?

Weren't they giving away those things at one point? THe boxes.

Depends on the area, for me, it stayed on for 6 years free LOL. I had everything but HBO, Starz, etc. But I had TNT, VS, CNN, G4, SyFy.

If they have a digital tv, they won't even need the box.

It stayed on for about a week and some change before I finally got legit cable.

Yeah, there was a huge gov't program giving these things away via a rebate program.

Damn, so what should I tell the person?

Get a box, hook it up, and their channels should convert automatically?

Comcast won't run any underground tests to make sure it is giving digital service to a paid customer?

Comcast is kind of slow when it comes to checking things. They have way too many customers now to keep an eye out on who is legit and who isn't. I mean hell mines lasted for 6 years before decided to get HBO. If I never got HBO it probably would be still free.

If someone is paying, they don't care. If the service is stopped, they will disconnect it soon. It may be included in the rent though.
