something i never understood about anime

I'm not a big anime guy but I have watched a series or two. I know the Japanese are a little less stuffy about innuendo in entertainment, but I've never fully understood which anime series are designed for kids vs the mature audience.

obviously shows like Bakugan and Pokemon are aimed at the youth. What about a series like Bleach? Do jiggly boobs (non nude) automatically deem an anime for the mature Japanese viewer? How about swearing or gratuitous carnage? If a young Japanese kid was watching an anime with his folks and a panty shot was shown, would there be embarrassment or would it be accepted as the norm? Just trying to understand another culture a little better.

They have comic book heroes called Rapeman, I think you can safely say they have little to no hangups about sex.

I'm not sure about that...didn't they pixelate pubic hair in their porn videos forever?

I just think their hang ups are different than ours culturally.

Fair enough, but I'd say with anime there isn't a lot of worry about hangups. Now that said, what time of day do these cartoons usually run in Japan? Here it's like 1am on Cartoon Network because of content, I wonder what it is there.......

"I've been to Tokyo. They sell little-girl underwear in the vending machines right on the main drag, the Ginza, or whatever. Guys in suits buying used girl panties. How is that okay? That's not okay." -The Informant

Bleach is shonen manga, which is typically aimed towards young boys 10-18. Bleach falls into this category, so does Naruto, Dragonball, One Piece, Full Metal Alchemist etc. Shojo manga is aimed at girls around the same age, example ar Sailor Moon and Cardcaptor Sakura.

Seinen manga is what's targeted towards adult males, stuff like Ghost in the Shell, Cowboy Bebop and Chobits. Shonen and Seinen is what you see on Adult Swim. Toonami was all shonen. Josei manga is it's counterpart for adult females.

I don't think swearing is AS big a deal over there. Take a shonen manga like Naruto, there's some swearing in there though it's not rife with it. From the stuff I've seen, panty shots are usually met with laughter since they almost always accompany a freak out nose bleed from a male character.

That's kind of what i'm getting at. some of the fanservice type stuff is just silly so I'm trying to figure out who these things are targeted towards.

I just watched this series called Basquash! the characters were pretty funny and the story moved along on its own merits. but every now and then they would throw in a little boob shot , and it always left me wondering "WTH was that all about?"

You can't show genitals in Japan hence the pixilating.

That said, their porn is almost always boring and borderline disturbing anyway.

Anything by Miyazaki is worth watching.

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)

You asked about the cultural differences in Japan's level of accepting sexuality across age ranges? How did you think this discussion would not have to address porn as well?

no, i asked about mature content in Japanese mainstream media. Even if porn fits that description in the context Japanese culture, I was very specific that I wanted to discuss anime. Please re-read the TITLE of the thread.

besides I'm sure the moderators won't allow that kind of discussion to go on for very long.

I always perceived "Spirited Away" as family friendly film. I've never seen but that's the vibe I got from it.

It's a movie that kids can watch but it doesn't pander or talk to down to kids. I first saw it in high school and I still enjoy it now. His movies are like Pixar movies, kids can enjoy them on one level and adults can enjoy them on another level.
