    PC Power Supplies: Interchangeable?

I'm reading some mixed messages on this, but wanted to upgrade my paltry 250W power supply to more so that I can finally use this 512mb vid card I've had lying around. But I'm hearing that it's not necessarily just an easy swap of a larger power source in your rig? Anyone know the bottom line?

Unless you've got some kind of mass-manufactured system that made use of a proprietary power supply with an odd shape (a few Dells, a few HP's, etc), just about any power supply will work just fine.

Semi-related, does your vid card require an additional power connector?

Yes, it does. And it actually worked with my old power supply for a bit, but I almost fried my system.

Yeah, make sure you get one large enough to push what you are running.

I screwed up my GPU by keeping the stock power supply that came with a Sony computer that I had purchased.

550 W will probably do you fine, but I would probably go 650 W just to be safe and for future upgrades. Do your research on your power supplies. The last thing you want is a bum power supply.

I've taken my old power supply with me to the store when finding a new one because I couldn't find the dimensions and screw holds didn't line up quite right. IT may seem weird but I hate asking a store rep if something will work and they have no clue and I end up making more than one trip.

You also need to see what connections you need for your entire system. SATA power connections or whatever hookup is needed for the video card and motherboard.

Finally, got the nerve to do this last night and so far so good. My casing was a bit tight, but got it to work. Ended up getting this one (which was actually $10 cheaper when I grabbed it.) I like how they had a sales video of sort to explain this a bit better. Next phase is to try my "better" vid card later today.
