Hollywood video went down where I live too. Only a matter of time for Blockbuster. The only rental place I see staying open is Family Video; 2 for $1 rentals and free kids movies.

Netflix streaming is fine, but they don't have new releases. That makes it bad, most people don't want to watch old movies.

Netflix instant watch is great. I've never heard of anyone that had it say otherwise.

The onDemand stuff does not require a membership fee. It's $2.99, which is cheaper than most PPV.

Netflix streaming is fine, but they don't have new releases. That makes it bad, most people don't want to watch old movies.

BB is trying to get casual viewers, they know they can't compete with Netflix for most of their members. They can get the people that only watch up to 5 movies a month though. They don't have a monthly fee, which will be the big sticking point to most people who use it.

Ok, then I misunderstood BB's offer. But how much money could they possibly be making on PPV for under 3$?

And I will never agree with you about Netflix Instant being anything less than stellar lol

1st - why 24 hours? If you've paid to rent it then why not at least the normal 5 day rental time??

2nd - the email came composed in a way that it's not spam, it's toward their subscribers

3rd - sorry but I beg to disagree, I've used netflix now for 2 weeks and they have a ton of great stuff, HD included, it streams perfect and yes there are a lot of newer titles on there. Not as many as in the store but a lot to choose from.

4th - I agree, that it has to be geared toward those who rent very little, because otherwise I can see no point for it in the least... Or maybe it's just geared toward those who are ignorant.

Here's the bottom line, for $16.99 a month with 3 dvds out, they at least should offer ALL non-new releases to streaming free of charge. Then one might be able to argue that it's worth it to keep the subscription vs. Netflix. As it is now there is no argument to be made, Netflixs value destroys Blockbuster by a mile.

I only watch new(er) releases. I think Blockbuster is catering to my market as it's cheaper than Netflix and I don't have to wait 30 days for certain releases..

Most people watch <5 movies a month. You would pay $12 for 4 movies. Netflix may be fine and might be cheaper for 1 movie out, but BB gets movies first and you don't have to mail and wait. Then there will be times where you might only watch 0-1 movie in a month. Netflix is for the people who watch a consistent/more number of movies a month.

This service has nothing to do with taking Netflix down. BB knows they can't beat Netflix, if they thought they could, they would of added streaming to their membership service.

As far as netflix streaming, just look at their "new" instant watch releases. None of those are new movies. Again, this isn't how many movies they have available, it's how many new movies do they have.

So basically Blockbuster is for people who either hardly ever watch movies but when they do are willing to spend 3 or 4 times as much money so they can immediately watch the newest movies. Hmm...they have a place for those people don't they? They're called movie theaters.... Heh..just saying..

And your point about BB knows they can't beat Netflix...why is that? If you offer me instant streaming of at minimum the non-newest movies then they could beat Netflix. So basically the argument is, well we can't compete so let's just charge a high amount. Isn't that circular logic? The reason they can't compete is because they charge a higher amount..

I love Blockbuster and in my case, it destroys netflix. I have 3 blu out at a time, unlimited exchanges, and I get the new release blu's every Tuesday. Plus, I get discounted game rentals if needed. Have a physical store in addition to the online will always trump anything Netflix can offer.

I used to think the same way until I tried Netflix thelwig. The streaming works great, even HD, and it's in addition to your membership. You can even stream movies to your iPad. It's a much better value IMO.
