Dual Band Routers - getting the most out of them

So I recently bought the Linksys E3000 dual band gigabyte router yesterday. I am trying to get the most out of the 5ghz band. So what channel should I use ?

I see it goes from 36 to 161.
And the freq is either 20 or 40, or 40 only.

So those with a dual band, what do you use ?

Re: Dual Band Routers - getting the most out of them

Ok browsing the net I made the following changes to my Linksys E3000 router.

Got my 5ghz channel on channel 161, 40hz freq only, N only, disabled CTS

Got my 2ghz channel on channel 11, 20hz only, N only, disabled CTS

Reading on the Linksys forums, I found out if you live North America, you can't use the default DFS mode on a dual band router on the 5ghz channel. For some reason it isn't allowed in North America, so you manually have to select a channel.

I got a wireless N adapter for my 360 and so far that is the only thing I have on the 5ghz channel. One PC hardwired into the gigabyte port, which I must say is just BLAZING fast. The 2 laptops and smartphones on the 2.4ghz channel.

Eventually I will buy some dual band usb cards for the laptops. So far so good.

Ok wirelessly a full room away on my laptop with its cheap built in wifi card, I am pulling in 133mbps, which WAY faster then what I was pulling in on the old router.

Should be an option for channel bonding on 5ghz radio. Do it. You can double your n speeds. Not sure what linksys calls it.

Yeah I got my 5ghz band bonded. However this laptop can't detect it with its cheap built in wifi card, however my 360 N adapter can, go figure.

update.....my laptop now gets 300mbps on the 2.4ghz channel. Don't know how the hell I did it, but hey I am not complaining LOL. That is a pretty damn good speed for wireless connection.

              Ok update.......

So far the only thing I have on the 5ghz channel is my xbox 360. I wanted to test how fast it was. Last night I took a tape measure and measured the distance from the 360 to the router. It is roughly 35ft away, going through one wall.

I downloaded the Tiger woods 11 demo, which is 1.6gb. It took me 23 minutes to download. I must say on my 360 I NEVER downloaded a demo of that size wirelessly that fast. On the 2.4ghz on my 360 it normally would take 90 minutes to download a demo of that size.

Being that I don't have a dual band usb card on my laptop right now, I can't speed test the 5ghz channel.

However I did speed test the 2.4ghz channel on the laptop, just using stock built in wifi card that is internal on the laptop. My download is 14 and my upload is 4, with a ping of 57, same distance as the xbox 360.

I must say that is a good speed for wireless. Which makes me wonder how fast it would be on the 5ghz channel.
