She's amazing live. Mad energy for the most part. She's so James Brown with her performance. I can't wait to see her again, hopefully up close.

I love this. I wish more albums were actually albums rather than 12 songs slapped together. You can tell there's a story here.

Some were talking about how Alicia Keys needed to save the Prince tribute. I was just like, y'all trippin'. Hell, I felt bad for the girl that had to follow Monae.
People just don't get it. Monae is making a statement with her look/attitude and singing great music all while keeping her clothes on and acting like a professional. That's refreshing.

Lol, don't tell her that. She signed Sean.

No matter how many times some people are hit in the face with good music, they will never get it. Janelle Monae is good music. Awesome artist.

I am liking this A LOT. I like her style - both musically and visually - and the fact that she is first and foremost: an artist. Loving the energy, the reverence to the old Motown style & sound but with a more of a Outkast/Atlanta-style fast pace, the use of a real band - not all synthesized studio mess - and the fact that she's a pretty face but not needing to capitalize on it. I really hope she doesn't give into the media and go the whole scantily clad route because it'd kill what I'm seeing of her.

I normally don't listen to female artists - no bias really, just not my style - but this may be the first non-metal/rock album I buy since Res' "How I Do" (2001), which although dated now, was an instant classic for me.

I got hip to her last year. Although I'm not a fan of her style, she makes good music.

Is it just me or does Locked Inside sound just like a Stevie Wonder song? I don't know if they sampled something but it sounds like Stevie produced it.

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)

Stevie isn't in any of the credits for the album, but I can't find more information on the individual track.

Yeah it does sound like a Stevie Wonder song. When I listen to the album I hear Stevie, Michael Jackson, Prince, Andre 3k etc. If my music horizon was more expanded I'm sure I'd hear a lot more influences.

I was not really a fan the first time I heard her music, it just didn't click with me. The more I hear though, the more I like her. The BET awards Prince performance was nice. I like the fact that she is different. I'm not sure I love her music, but the fact that she has her own style and seems very independent makes her much more appealling. She is definitely growing on me.

Props to the fellas that sent me some of her stuff earlier. She will be getting some serious rotation burn in the Ipod this weekend and on my drive to NY next week.

Golden Lady. Vocal melody at least.

It definitely sounds like a song from Innervisions.

I can lay down with Oh, Maker on repeat and never get tired of it.

Definitely Innervisions sound with a sprinkling of early MJ (especially at the very beginning).
