Re: ICE takes down nine piracy sites
Indeed... booooo. TVShack was pretty good too.
At least they didn't get to my precious ATDHE...
As far as piracy in general, I'd gladly sit through an ad or 2 like Hulu to watch the shows I watch illegally. It's their own fault (especially networks like HBO that struggle with piracy the most due to their subscription-only status) for not figuring out how to be viable with a model like that, because it's the wave of the future.
The broadcast networks see the writing on the wall, hence Hulu Plus, etc. HBO and the other pay networks have to realize the same thing... people will still pay for the convenience of the subscription for DVRing, etc., but I think they're missing a chance to expand the appeal of their shows while also taking a bite out of illegal downloading/streaming. I think most people would rather have a quality feed with a few commercials like Hulu than have to sit around waiting around for a torrent to download or sitting through a streaming site with Chinese characters covering part of the screen and crappy quality. I have qualms about downloading illegally as well, and I'd much prefer to get something legally, but I'm still not about to shell out money for it on a monthly basis. They can be ad-supported, I'm sure of it.Last edited by Stumbleweed; 07-02-2010, 12:26 PM.Send your Midnight Release weirdo pics/videos to my new website: http://www.peopleofmidnightreleases.com!Comment

Re: ICE takes down nine piracy sites
"ICE Assistant Secretary John Morton, speaking at a Walt Disney Studios soundstage where he was joined by movie studio executives and union representatives, trumpeted the bust as the beginning of a "long-term effort to turn the tables on these thieves." The targeted websites, he added, are "run by people who have no respect for creativity and innovation."
I love they were at Disney, one of the worst monopolies in the world.
"Preet Bharara, U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, said in a statement that the actions were necessary to protect the jobs and livelihoods of "ordinary working people" and warned others involved in similar websites. The studios claim that they lose hundreds of millions of dollars annually to pirated content.
"If your business model is piracy, your story will not have a happy ending," Bharara said.
Ordinary Working People? The government is only protecting the few overly rich p.o.s. who have all the power. The government doesn't care about the creators, just the rich people who give them money.Comment

Creativity and innovation? lol
Stuff like this just pisses me off. I am sure if they cared about the ordinary person they would instead of paying Tom Cruise $20 million for a movie, they would pay him a lot less and spread that wealth to the grips, writers and other crew.
I'd like to see an indepent study of how much money is actually lost. Most people pirate movies they would have other wise had no intention of ever paying money to see. It's the same with music, most people I know will pay for music of artists they like and that need the money and just download crap like lil wayne who doesn't need it.Comment

That's what always gets me. People talking about how companies don't deserve the money, yet they're supplying criminals with money by using their sites. I suppose if it's not coming out of their pocket, though, that doesn't matter?Last edited by MC Fatigue; 07-02-2010, 12:55 PM.Comment

Re: ICE takes down nine piracy sites
And what about the fact that the people who often provide these materials via websites and torrents are making money from their websites? People are basically letting thieves make money by using their sites.

That doesn't take away from the fact that they're crooks and that they're making money off of it through ads on their sites.Comment

Piracy is here, and shutting down sites or suing people constantly won't do anything. The movie industry decided to fight piracy in some countries by beating the pirates to the market with a cheaper bare bones dvd copy of the film. They can sell them cheap, and get them out before the higher quality dvd screeners hit the internet.
I don't see why they couldn't do that here. They'd translate some pirates into customers, theaters will still get traffic, and movie studios would still be able to sell proper DVD/bluray copies later.Comment
