I enjoy it as well... especially when they go house to house and pick one to move into.

Don't remember what that show is called, but I love it.

House Hunter. They had this show called "Sleep on it." And when I was kid it was my friend's house. That was wild seeing it on TV about 5 years ago. Still look the same and they ended up buying it too. I said to my wife that is my childhood friend's house.

I enjoy some of the shows but even though I've got a decent skill set for remodeling rooms and what not...they tend to make the changes look to easy/cheap compared to the reality of a non contractor job.

It's why I dig Renovation Realities the most. It's a island of sanity on a sea of shows where large crews of highly skilled pro's make gutting a bathroom look easy.

I can understand what you are saying, I can't watch that show though. They are idiots and thinking they can do it on your own, well I think that is asking for trouble. With the pros they do it right and it looks really good. Also, they show how much it cost for the remodel and how much labor would cost on some shows. My concerns would be the electrical and plumbing with this Renovation Realities.

He is a great contractor. So when I bought this fix up home. He did all the work for free and it was done right too. And wow this house I live in rocks now. We gutted every thing. From bedrooms, to bathrooms and kitchens and so on. And it only cost me about $50,000 for all the supplies.
My guess is that it was pulled b/c the production costs were too high. I know the home owners paid for some of the stuff Holmes and his crew went back and fixed but for the most part, it was the show that paid of Holmes to go in and fix things correctly. That adds up to a lot of dough after a few episodes.

It's much cheaper for the network to do shows like House Hunters and For Rent. HoH was probably the most-expensive show on the network.

I thought that too. But if it show was making the network money I would think they would keep it. Maybe he decided he was tired of the show. I know a lot of those guy that were on the show did a lot of that labor and time for free. It was really cool to see that too.

Watched an episode of Property Virgins this weekend. It was in Utah and I think I'd love to move there because the home prices are dirt cheap. The young couple bought a 3000sq foot house for $240,000 (basement was unfinished so finishing that would add to the square footage). Very nice amenities inside as well...only complaint I had was that it only had 1 sink in the master bathroom.

I love this channel too. My lady & I always get good ideas and inspiration on things we can do around the house; plus, I enjoy seeing the designers' choices of architectural, form & space, and color palette preferences and what they do with it.

Those property virgin and what things cost shows really stress me out. It seems people are bending over backwards to put themselves in tight situations with money over simple ego. My fiance and I bought a beautiful, remodeled 1940's home outside of Austin for $80,000... that's $600 a month which is far less than most people pay for a 1 bedroom apartment.

                    That's my point exactly.

Too many "Weekend" workers watch a team of on screen model types tear out a kitchen and rebuild it in a half hour show. When the reality is teams of unfilmed contractors do the heavy stuff off camera.

I have buddies that end up calling me three weekends into this kind of project begging for help. You get there and it's a disaster and they've tapped their TV budget dry.

With the better Renevation Realities...at least you see the problems usually involved.

Yeah, my fiance really loves HGTV, and at some point we will be buying a house, so we're taking notes. If we're ever on Property Virgins, though, we'd be the most boring television ever. No drama... in fact, the closest thing to drama would be my hammy acting.

Agreed. That's why I like the show b/c it shows what "really" goes into a remodeling project. I just wish these people would be more realistic with their timeframes, but then again, that's probably how they get on the show by saying they are going to complete the project within a week.

Those shows like Man Caves and Trading Spaces used to drive me nuts b/c no way would those types of jobs be done that well in that short amount of time unless you had 10-20 quality people working long hours to get it done.

in man caves and trading spaces you loose the reality of time with these shows, my understanding though these shows take at least 10 days

                                Re: HGTV!

I've got a house built in 1963 and the previous owners were the original owners and they did practically NOTHING to the place.

So room by room I'm remodeling the joint.

In my head, it's a HGTV show called "One Man, One Room, One Week...Under One Thousand Dollars."

I'm currently going 3 out of 5. The two failures being the kitchen and living room where the wife got too involved in the picking process and jacked the budget and schedule with some projects I haven't even finished yet.

I just nailed the bedroom and bathroom over the last two weeks (out of work so I got some time and the wife has been out of town) but the bathroom was a perfect example of crap going wrong. My wife last year pulled the wall paper off and then painted over top of the glue and backing fiber. So I had planned on just retexturing and repainting the small room.

While caulking the sink, found the back of the bowl lip was rusted out. When pulling it the counter laminate tore and the drain pipe was also rusted out. Saved a ton of change by going to a ReStore resale outlet for Habitat for Humanity. Bought the sink and left over tile and created a mosaic on the counter top.

A old ventilation fan that didn't work ended up only being binded by the flute having open inward but the whole thing wasn't vented anywhere...just into the attic so I had to to run duct and install a soffet vent.

The house isn't grounded but I always replace the outlets/switches when I do a room. Got a new light fixture on clearance at Lowes and a blind stupid cheap at Ollies.

Would have liked to tear out replace the floor tile but it's still in good shape and not a priority at this time.

Whole project took 5 days and came out to 350$
