RT rating is great. $37 MM budget? Man, Affleck is going to run away with this one. Definitely looking forward to watching it.

And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

its simple for me. Boston is my second home. Affleck boys and Damon know how to tell Boston stories. I'm going to see it no matter what.

        Re: The Town

Saw this last night (followed by Inception haha).

It was a great movie, I don't think anyone here can deny that. But I wonder if people are over-liking it because there was a good set of surprises along the way. Not in the story, but in the expectation. I don't think many people here expected Ben Affleck to deliver (and I don't get the hate for him anyway, it seems to be unanimous for some unknown reason like he shouldn't be able to act), they didn't expect a movie with guns to have heart, and they must not have expected the storyline's style to keep up with what the trailer promised.

This movie was shot incredibly well, though. It's funny how, well, I think that most movies should have this kind of "simplicity" in its shootings as opposed to a Tony Scott film or something. Get out of the way, director... I'm trying to watch a movie (no pun intended as Affleck was actually in his own directed movie haha). The directing was good enough without having to be ambitious, though I do admire ambitious directors when the piece is done properly. Those are the ones who get recognized.

But all I'm saying is that this movie is a 94% on RT. It really must be telling of how weak movies are these days, perhaps trying too hard and under-delivering. Because to be honest, this movie didn't do anything any differently than any other movie in the past has done. It was just natural, and maybe that's why it was liked so much. Nothing was souped up, nothing was far from elemental, and nothing played off too uncannily in the story's form when it came to potential twists or rogue characters. It was straightforward and it had its good lighthearted moments while staying Boston-gritty.

Again, it was too decent to be a poor movie. I'm just hoping this isn't pushing for Oscar nominations (outside of the acting department, that is).

See, exactly. That's what I'm saying. It was so "core" that it is strange no other movies have really done that before. That's not to say that it was necessarily different, but it took natural aspects and through it into an eventful story. This is absolutely something that could happen in real life given the proper resources, so Affleck being able to portray this is really appealing.

I just think that movie scores are like diving scores, though. You get scored based on the execution as well as the difficulty. 90%+ movies on RT deliver on the basis of an ambitious project. I didn't see ambition in this, but in many ways it's also why I liked it. I just don't want to see it running up for Best Picture at the Academy because it was what most movies should be like anyway haha (even though they're not). Too many of them fall into "movie magic" and do not execute properly.

EDIT: Actually, I'll take back what I said. I believe 94% is justified; that score is the amount of fresh tomatoes over the total number of reviews. If this movie got 100% fresh tomatoes, it would be well justified. As I said, it was far too decent of a movie to be considered poor. It's the average score that I don't think should be running up alongside The Departed, though.

saw this last nite for the half price deal. Both the wife and I agreed it was a tad better and more entertaining than Inception.

              Great flick.
