    Slow *** computer

My computer was running just fine earlier today but now all of a sudden it's slowed to a crawl. When I click on the start menu it takes about 30+ seconds for it to show up. Opening up pages or programs also takes a really long time. The weird thing is that when pages are loaded up then I can scroll and type just fine without any slowdown.

I've also done a scan using Avira Antivirus and got no warnings or detections so I'm assuming there is no virus although you never know if there could be one hidden that the scan didn't detect.

Also to throw in one last problem, restarting the computer is basically out of the question for me. The reason is because I think my disc drive is basically toast. A week or two ago I was trying to import a CD into iTunes that I made years ago and as it was trying to import, iTunes froze up. I tried to eject the CD but it wouldn't come out and kept making loud noises. Eventually it did come out but ever since then, the drive doesn't read any CD I put in. You can hear it start up but nothing happens. The problem with this is that a few months ago I had to get a friend to reformat my computer and for some reason when you start the computer up, you need to have the disc with the drivers in or else it gets stuck on the startup screen (not frozen but I have no idea what to do from there).

So can anyone help me out? Even if it's just the first problem that's fine, I just want to get my computer back up to a normal running speed.

Now see the problem with never restarting your computer is that it accumulates lots of junk and stuff that would normally be purged when you restart and ultimately causes a drop in performance. A couple things you could try

    1. Clear your internet cache
    2. Run a disk cleanup to get rid of junk files
    3. Defragment your hard drive.

I did do a disk cleanup but there really wasn't much to get rid of.

Can I ask how to do #1 and #3? I have no idea.

This is for Windows XP so I don't know if it's different for other OS if you don't have XP.

        1. Start > settings > control panel then click the "Network and internet Connection" icon in the window that comes up then intenet options in the next screen. On the "General" tab there should be a button that says delete which will allow you to delete your internet cache and a bunch of other stuff.

        3. Again, go into your control panel, but this time click the "Performance and Maintenance" button and then select "Rearrange items on your hard drive". Disk defragmenter can also be accessed by start > programs > accessories > system tools > disk degragmenter.

This may be slightly different depending on how you have your start menu set up.

Ok I did the first one. I couldn't find a Network And Internet Connection icon so I went into Internet Options and there was a delete button there so I deleted Cookies, Temporary Internet Files, History and Forms. Don't know if that's the same thing you're talking about though.

Anyways, I did that and still the same slow speed so right now I'm in the Disk Defragmenter. I clicked on Analyze and it says "You should defragment this volume" so I'm gonna go ahead with that and see if that helps out at all.

            Re: Slow *** computer

Ok, I finished up the defragment but it did nothing to get the speed back up.

At this point I'm just gonna assume I have some kind of virus because I really don't know why else it would just suddenly slow down like this.

I just find it weird that it's not slow while I type this post or if I were to look at a thread and scroll up and down on one page but if I click a link, try to go to a different site, open a program, click the start button, etc. it's really slow.

Try testing your memory, because it very well could be a hardware issue. If in the time you said your machine was running fine and it started to crawl you didn't visit questionable sites or download questionable things, it's probably hardware related.

Download and burn to cd Memtest86 or Memtest86+. You'll have to restart your computer to boot it from the CD.

Yeah, there was no questionable site visiting or downloading . The only thing I downloaded was an iTunes update but I don't think that could cause my entire computer to slow down.

Thanks for the links. Only thing is I don't have a burner on my computer. I guess I could use a friend's computer to do that though.

You can install it to floppy as well. But damn, you don't have a cd burner? How old is your machine?

                    Re: Slow *** computer

When I run into these issues here is what I do.

                    1. If I know a distinct date when the pc was running fine and then it became sour and slow then I do a system restore.

You can do a system restore by doing - start -> programs -> accesories -> system tools -> system restore. This will take you back to the original point before you downloaded any program that has slowed your system.

                    2. There could be a program running in the background using up all your resources that you are unaware of. There are 2 ways that I use to close down unwanted programs operating in the background.

                    a. Look at your toolbar tray at the bottom to see if there are any programs there running unnecessarily. Open that program up and go into options to have that program not open up during the start up process. You can also right click on their icons and turn them off.

                    b. This is an option where you have to restart your pc. Click start -> run -> and in the run box type in msconfig. This will give you a box that allows you to select which start up programs you want to use and which ones you don't. I would not suggest messing with this until you have an idea which programs you feel might be the issue.

                    3. You may not have a virus lurking undetected but malware, if that is the case go to the MS website and download Microsoft security essentials. It does a great job of scanning your pc of any system sapping malware.

You just said your computer drive is basically about to die, and you're wondering why it's slow...

You need to back anything you need to a flashdrive and buy a new HD.

It's just going to die eventually - so why not just deal with it? It's like saying you can't turn your car off because it won't start back up - so instead of driving to a dealer and getting the part fixed, you're just going to drive it around until you run out of gas and are stuck in the middle of who knows where.

Yeah if you start hearing clicking sounds coming from your hard drive, it is on the verge of dying, so you better hurry up and save everything while you can. Because I know when mines starting clicking, about a month or less later it died.

To be honest, I have no clue. I can operate a computer just fine but I'm bad with that "advanced" aspect of computers.

All I know is the tower is a Dell. It's not a newer one just from the look of it. It has 2 USB ports on the front, a floppy drive and a CD drive.

I didn't think the CD drive being screwed wasn't that big of a deal (hence me not being that good with the hardware aspect of computers). I just thought I wasn't going to be able to use CD's anymore. Didn't know it was going to slow down the entire computer.

I'm not getting any clicking sounds. I'm actually getting no sound when before, if I were to open up something like iTunes, you could hear it start up and start running. But now there's just no sound. iTunes still opens though.
