        Well when you said this:

Also to throw in one last problem, restarting the computer is basically out of the question for me. The reason is because I think my disc drive is basically toast.

I had to assume you meant disk drive as in your hard disk drive.

If not - then go ahead and restart your computer. What could that possibly do to your CD drive? If your CD drive dies - it's going to die, it won't have anything to do with you restarting your computer, it will have to do with it just mechanically failing.

No, I'm not worried about it dying if I restart the computer. I'm already pretty sure it's dead. I was just worried about restarting it because when I had my computer reformatted a few months back, I turned it off one day and when I turned it back on I couldn't get past the startup screen until I put in a CD I have with the drivers and all that stuff. I figured that since the CD drive is dead, if I were to restart the computer I would end up getting stuck on the startup menu.

But I just found out after I woke up today that it's alright to restart it. My friend was over and I guess the computer froze up on him while I was sleeping so he restarted it and everything was fine. Except the fact that the computer is still running pretty slow.

I find it weird though that if I watch a video or make a post, everything runs smooth and at the speed it normally did. It's when I try opening things up, it takes a good 30+ seconds for whatever it is to open up. In my experiences when a computer was getting slow down it was with everything I did. Has this happened to anyone else before or did the entire computer slow down?

Well this is odd. My computer is running fine again. I have no idea how or why it happened, but I guess it somehow kick-started itself back up. To add to the weirdness is that the CD drive is working again.

Really, really strange considering I did nothing to make it work normally again but I'm happy. Thanks for all the help to everyone that posted.

Hmm sounds like what happened with my DVD drive. It switched to a mode that was clogging up my PC performance every time I did any kind of disc burning and after I had re-installed the drive it still was pretty bad.....Then all of a sudden it started working again

Anyways as to slow PC, usually when my gets really slow it's because my virtual memory becomes low and a restart usually rights the ship.
