    Judge Dredd remake

a.k.a. further proof that Hollywood is out of ideas and would rather remake crappy movies than come up with something new and original *cough*Inception*cough*.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Karl Urban could be beaming back to a much grittier future.

It looks like the New Zealand-born actor, who played Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy in last year's Star Trek reboot, will soon play the sci-fi law enforcer Judge Dredd.

"Yes, there is a lot of truth to that rumour," Urban told journalists at Comic-Con Thursday, responding to a report on the UK website Bleeding Cool.

"It's early days yet, but it is something that's definitely looking very, very good."

Alex Garland (28 Days Later, The Beach) has penned a screenplay purportedly more faithful to the original British comics. Pete Travis (Vantage Point) will direct.

In 1995, Sylvester Stallone starred in a Dredd adaptation that bombed at the box office.

Regardless of Dredd's fortunes, Urban has that other science-fiction franchise to fall back on. Cameras are expected to roll on a Star Trek sequel next year for a June 2012 premiere.

The Judge Dredd concept makes for good comics but as a movie it's a terrible property. I can't believe they're trying this again.

Not saying this is going to be good but there have been lots of movies where the source material was good but was transitioned poorly to screen. Some of them include highly regarded books and plays. If put in the right hands (such as the declining batman series) a very gritty more realistic approach to this film could make it very appealing.

Though the original movie was lacking in many areas, it was certainly entertaining and I enjoyed it for what it was. It had some interesting concepts and ideas but it was ruined by some poor acting and IMO some poor choices in the tone of the film, especially from the leading man Stallone.

I have to say when I was younger I did like the original movie. Probably because I was little and dumb in the head but I thought Judge Dredd just looked cool.

Then I seen it on TV 2 years ago and decided to watch. Big mistake.

Not sure about Urban as Judge Dread. He just doesn't strike me as having the right presence for the role...if they do stick to the source materials.

Hopefully this one is as terribly awesome as the original.

I think he is too pretty myself. Need a guy who looks like he was kicked I. The mouth as a daily exercise routine. Also wouldn't mind a muscular type of dude. That's just me though. We shall see how this turns out.

I love the 1st Judge Dredd movie. It's a good, quick, fun movie, I watch it whenever it airs. Armand Assante steals every scene he's in, Diane Lane looks amazing, and it has Jurgen Prochnow and Max von Sydow. Assante is so awesome in the movie I can't put it into words.
As Shaquille O'Neal left the Suns practice court, he yelled out, "Alvin's the coach. We must be the Clippers. And I must be Olowokandi. Nooooo!"

Without a doubt, one of the worst movies I've ever seen. It's so bad that it's funny.

I liked Judge Dredd when it came out. I haven't seen it since.

I did too. I didn't think it was the greatest movie I ever saw,but I don't think it's as bad as people make it out to be. People make it out to be Street Fighter:The Movie bad.

Considering they remade those pathetic batman movies (the Val Kilmer one was just terrible) into some of my favorite movies of all time I can't write this off but i won't get my hopes up for anything too special.

That's different though, isn't it? The first 2 Tim Burton Batman's were great and Batman is one of the most known characters ever with some of the best stories in comics and I guess you could say writing in general.

Judge Dredd on the other hand, I don't know how well that comic is. Hell I didn't even know it was a comic book until now.

I never heard of the Ghost in the Shell comic (originated in Japan) until I saw the movie and tv series. Who's to say the comic version is horrible but the movie and tv versions are great. I wouldn't know cause I never read to comic.

Judge Dredd was a popular comic in England.
