Whatever way you go though towards gaming the prebuilts are going to give you the processor needed but probably won't allow overclocking to get the processor to its potential and handicap you in the graphics card. The prebuilts normally don't have great airflow and really show high temps under load as well which will be very obvious when gaming.

Post back what you end up deciding on and if you want to do some deep research or ask some computer nuts you can check out overclock.net for a plethora of information and a community to computers like the community here is to sports games.
Yeah....I know, but I don't really have the time/energy to deal with building one. I've done it in the past and run into issues where I had to send stuff back and whatnot. I'd rather find a decent prebuilt even though it's not the 100% best option.

I appreciate the input, I'm just lazy and don't want to deal with all the issues, but I'll give it another look and think about it.

You should seriously consider AVA as they custom build it and you will be able to upgrade their systems much easier than any prebuilts.

Are you buying a new monitor or do you have one already? And what resolution are you going to be running?

Its going to make a huge difference in what video card you want to look at.

I have a 21ish Samsung widescreen LCD that should be fine for now...I may upgrade in the future (something with HDMI, mine has DVI and VGA), but it has a pretty good resolution (1900xsomething I think?). It's a good monitor, only 2 years old.

I told you! Seriously, I've already upgraded mine. It now has a 600 watt PSU and a Nvidia GTX260 in it. Not really a better card, but it has an HDTV out jack, which I needed for capture on the HD-PVR. My friend has been over today working with me on my video and he's just in awe of how fast this PC is. I think his wife is gonna hate me. Problem is, he brought his Zi8 over, my wife is now hating me.... Gotta have one! LOL!

Yeah, I'm good with my setup now, but if I have to update I'll probably do the PSU too...

Re: New desktop PC (somewhat for gaming)

Just like the OP I am going to invest in a gaming/everyday pc. I need something that is cost effective. Something no higher than $1000.

I saw it mentioned that you have to be careful if you buy a cheaper pc and add a good video card to it. I thought about doing this, but what would I have to do?

Im not up to date at all on the video cards these days. If I wanted to play NBA 2k11 on the highest settings what card would I need for this?

                        Thanks in advance.

Re: New desktop PC (somewhat for gaming)

Well if you going to buy a regular PC and just upgrade the card on it, you will also have to upgrade the Power Supply. Your average general PC only comes with a 350watt or 400watt Power Supply.

Where as you midlevel to top of the line graphics card going to need at least 600 to 850 watt power supply. Somethings to keep in mind........

CPU speed is more import then the number of cores. Sounds dumb but my wife has a dual core but it is only 2GHZ, every modern or even 2 year old game she tries to play it fails because it says her CPU speed isn't fast enough.

So ideally you want a PC with 3ghz cpu speed, whether it be dual, quad, or 6 core. Make sure that cpu speed is up there to 3ghz or faster. Ram......Anything above 3 gigs is runnable. Granted it the more RAM, the better, but no less then 3.

Graphics cards..........First thing is always think about the size of your case. Some graphic cards depending on who makes them can be big as hell and will only fit in a full tower case.

$290......You will be future proofed for a good while

It's past time I upgraded my machine and I need some help. First, here is what I am using right now:

                            http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16883227077

The only difference being I am using an ATI Radeon HD 4600 series video card. I'd like an upgrade to that card, the mobo(and memory), and cpu. I can run a lot of newer games on medium settings but I'm looking towards ESV: Skyrim this fall in addition to a few other titles and would like to be able to run them in most, if not all their glory. Would also like to be covered for more graphics intensive titles later on down the road.

-I've replaced simple things like memory, hard drives, burners and cards but never a mobo or processor. I can follow a tutorial easily enough though. I'm on a budget of about 500-750 bucks. I am already considering a Radeon 6950 2GB, maybe even 2x 6850 1GB in Crossfire if there's enough room in the case (it's pretty big). So, can someone help me get me started on that? Hurry before my wife changes her mind.
                            PS: You guys are great.

I've got a 6950, and love it thus far. Very nice card. Mine is the 1GB version. I've read through different sites that the 1GB version performs better on a lot of games than the 2GB version, although I'm not sure why. The 2gB version though, some of them have a bios switch that you can flash it into the 6970, much faster card. All in the luck of the draw.

Replacing a mobo and processor, etc is all fairly simple. There are hundreds of youtube tutorials out there that are as in depth as you want them.

If you want some help w/ system specs and stuff, I can link y ou up to what I have. I have an AMD system, with x6 Core 1090T Processor that runs above 3.2GHz per core, 4GB (Ordered another 4 for a total of 8GB) Corsair 1600 (PC12800) Memory, and an Asus M4A78TE motherboard. If I could, I'd go ahead and get one of the Asus republic of gamers motherboards as well. Those things are NICE.
