    Grunge Music

Anyone listen to grunge music? Didn't see any threads about it.... What are some of your favorite songs of the grunge era?

This would have to be my favorite Alice in Chains song...

My favorite grunge band came out after grunge was 'dead'... Seether. What a great band they are these days.

          Re: Grunge Music

You don't need to be from Seattle to be grunge. Seether has more of a grunge sound than soundgarden ever did, they were metal.

          <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/jZ0n-GzenA8&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/jZ0n-GzenA8&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

If you didn't know any better, you'd think that was a live Kurt recording. Their music is also very Nirvana-esque.

          <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Hf32Zuqzptc&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Hf32Zuqzptc&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

          And here's an original:

            Re: Grunge Music

Grunge is probably the worst genre description in the history of music. Really the only band that should be described as grunge is Green River and like I said in my first post the major thing these bands had in common were they were formed or were from the same general area.

Seether is nothing special in the sea of mainstream rock. Most popular rock bands have obvious Nirvana influences/imitations. To see them put in the same sentence as Nirvana is disheartening and I'm not even a big Nirvana fan.

It feels weird to see grunge classified as "classic rock" and listen to Pearl Jam on those stations.

              I am getting old.
As Shaquille O'Neal left the Suns practice court, he yelled out, "Alvin's the coach. We must be the Clippers. And I must be Olowokandi. Nooooo!"

                  Re: Grunge Music

Grunge was more a fashion statement than an actual genre of music. What makes a song like Pearl Jam's "Black" grunge as opposed to just rock? I couldn't give you an answer, only that early on Pearl Jam was labeled a grunge band so anything they do is considered grunge. From a technical standpoint, there wasn't a whole lot separating Nirvana from early Beatles. Apparently Cobain's some-what depressing lyrics called for a whole new genre of popular music. Grunge was basically just a marketing thing, Nirvana sounded different from the popular rock at the time so the record label wanted to market it as something else, which necessitated the label.

Anyways, I never have and still don't think of the band as "grunge," but my favorite of that era is Alice in Chains.

Soundgarden plays tonight at Lollapalooza as the headliners. I can't wait until there is some recordings of their performance as I am very thankful for Soundgarden's return to the music world. They also had a small concert on the 5th.

I did. I was a little worried about how Chris would do, but the whole crew sounded badass. The video of Beyond the Wheel is ridiculously awesome.

Their performance a couple days ago at the Vic theater was stellar as well.

Yeah. They have covered a ****load of different Nirvana songs over the years, each as amazingly.

I also think he is one of the better songwriters in rock atm. Not to mention his voice is insane.

Those Seether covers sound like every high school Nirvana wanna be garage band that I heard back in the day.

I'm a pretty big fan of Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam and STP (if you want to consider them grunge) and I do like to listen to others (Mudhoney, Melvins, Screaming Trees, Mother Love Bone, etc) but I wouldn't consider myself a huge fan.
