Re: Help with buying new computer

All depends on what you want the computer for. If you plan to game ( anything recent ) then you have a couple of upgrades to make to that computer.

1st will most definantly be a new video card. Intergrated graphic cards wont handle gaming at any sort of decent framerate. You will have to set all options to low, turn advanced settings off, and reduce your resolution to make most modern games work.

Most likely your powersupply will need to be upgraded and it seems like you dont know much about computers ( due to the " how do you upgrade graphic cards " ) so adding a powersupply isnt as easy and one would think

Graphic cards are pretty much just plug and play. Insert it into your PCI slot and turn the computer on and run the install disc.

When and if you get ready to add those things, just find a friend that knows what they are doing, Best Buy would charge you around 20% of the cost of that computer to add just a few items.

Re: Help with buying new computer

I didn't want to start another "help me buy something" thread so I figured I'd just post in here. I'm getting a desktop and trying to decide what to get. I don't need to play games but I want to have something reasonably powerful that won't need to be upgraded after a year. I customized one at hp but I want to have a few different computers to pick from before making a final decision. Here's the one I customized:

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)

What's your budget jmood. Low/middle/high range. Let us know what you're "ideally" looking to spend, and what you're really looking for in a PC. What does the HP cost? I see some things that stand out to me, but need to know what that one costs, and what you're looking to spend.

I completely forgot to put the budget down, that one is $918 and is the high end of my limit. I would rather spend less than that but if it's good and will last for awhile, I'm fine with spending around that much or slightly more (probably around $950). I'll be doing a lot of multitasking so I don't want anything that will start chugging when a few programs are running simultaneously but outside of that, there's not much that I need.

Any particular "size" of machine you're looking for? Compact tower vs full sized? I'll see what I can come up with as well.

That one is a much better from a specs standpoint, granted, no monitor. If you don't feel comfortable building your own, I'd suggest staying away from "building one" through a manufacturer. Normally you can grab a good deal through a reseller such as amazon or newegg, etc.

2 things, Do you need a monitor? Do you need a bluray player? I see you have one spec'ed in the HP.

One train of thought is to make sure you get a SSD drive, to ensure that the computer is "speedy" in loading/switching/multitasking. SSD's help out tremendously, and is probably the single most "dominant" piece of hardware speedwise in a computer.

Whatever size that tower is in the hp one I guess lol. I had no idea that there were different sizes.

I do need a monitor but I was looking at a few so I could pick up that and buy one of the monitors I was looking at. I know that SSD's are fast but they're also pretty expensive so I'll probably get one later on down the line. I wanted a Blu-Ray drive on it but it's not essential, I just wanted to future-proof it a little.

Not a problem. I'll keep it at 7200RPM, and without a monitor. I'll also keep a BD drive in there

I would stray from that HP, since it has a lower end i5 processor, and a very week graphics card for the price. Let our OS Computer brethren search, ha.

I know one thing, when I finally pony up to get a laptop, I'm coming here.

I would look and see i5, and think automatically it is good enough.
