Dark Tower movie AND TV series confirmed

Wow. I'll remain skeptical, as this will be an enormous undertaking, but with some decent names behind it, hopefully it will turn out alright. Never quite heard of a TV series and movie being developed together, but if they use the TV series to fill in some missing pieces from the movies (which obviously won't be able to include everything), then this may turn out alright.

Who do you guys want as the Gunslinger?

Seems like it was discussed here back when it hit the rumor mill, but I think doing it the way they are (tv show and movies) is brilliant. I will say I hope the tv series ends up on HBO/Showtime/Starz rather than broadcast.

As for Roland, I have no idea, can't seem to place anyone.

Well, the seven book series is one of my favorites. When I first heard the idea of making this film, it was originally attached to Lindeloff (writing) and Abrams (directing/producting). Of course, they dropped it citing being too huge a fan of the books and stating they couldn't imagine doing it justice on film.

I will say this right now: I will accept that the movies will not be as good as the books. There simply is no way they can capture that entire world in a trilogy and two television series.

Now, acknowledging that, I'm excited for this. It's a world that great cinematography could capture beautifully.

Depending on which Roland drawing is used, the potential actors could vary. There are illustrations that make Hugh Jackman look like a good choice, but he's too big a star and too soft for this role (yea, I just said that). Viggo Mortenson is another option, I'm sure. But, I'm still not convinced with both those men. I would prefer they found a new name.

I wonder if they'll consider continuing the series beyond the two seasons.

Never heard of this series but after a brief synopsis I'm going to read the books. I downloaded a big batch of e-books a couple of years ago and coincidentally, I already have them in pdf format on my computer lol. I've never read a Steven King book but this sounds interesting.

I've only read 1, 2 and part of three but own all the books. Truthfully I need to buy new versions of 5-7 because they're just too big and uncomfortable for me to really carry them around.

That said, this should be awesome.

And just to add for anyone that might be weary of following trobinson's footsteps:

This series is not your typical horror Stephen King. Though, knowing what I read, I can see some horror elements thrown in the film - especially from later in the series.

This one is an adventure, mostly fantasy fiction but with a lot of the Old West thrown in.

I'm still not wild about the way he handled a certain new element in the last two books of the series, but it doesn't take away from the story of Roland too much. The reader still gets what they want in the end (though that is even up for debate). Seriously, there should be a thread on the Dark Tower alone.

Read them, man. Wolves of the Calla is my favorite.

Yeah, I really need to. Loved the first two, but my dad stole the 3rd while I was reading it and I just got it back the other day.

To be honest I nearly stopped during the third book, the Mejis flashback was boring as hell.

You mean Book IV: Wizard And Glass?

Book III primarily takes place in Lud.

Anyway, I enjoyed the flashback. It's the reason why I want to read the prequel comics.

Different strokes... Wizard & Glass and the Roland flashback was my favorite part of the series. That love story broke my heart and I was devestated at the end of it.

I've read through the whole series twice now. I've read just about everthing King has ever written, but never got around to reading these for the 1st time until about 5 years ago. I love them.

It's definitely not like anything else he has ever written. He was going for an **** Lord of the Rings-type tale. I'd suggest reading a newer version of the orginal Gunslinger, as he has edited it to synch more with the rest of the books and has a great prologue. The series started when he was 19 (if I remember right) and went through his accident. He wrote the last few books post-accident and it kind of shows. The last few books feel a little rushed to me and not as good as the 1st few (pre-accident), but they're excellent. They're not for everybody, though, and I've read a lot of people's opinions about the ending of the series.

Anyway, my expectations for any kind of movie/series is low. I hope to be pleasanly surprised, but this would be challenging to pull off to say the least.

I guess we'll see what ka has in store for us.

The only person that can do Roland justice is a 20-30 years younger Clint Eastwood. Anyone else is just a place holder. Get to the time machine!

Roland is a lot older; in years and in hard living; than most of today's big names.

Oh, just thought of one Dennis Quaid. Not sure if he has the acting chops to pull it off. If he went the distance and lost some weight the hard way to get more haggard he could at least pull off the look.

Holt McCallany is some one who popped up on tv while I was posting this. A little young and muscled, but he could go on a hardcore meth diet and play the part.

I like him as an actor, I just don't think you could age him enough to do justice to Roland as he is written.

I don't know if he could pull it off anyway, when he played 47 (Hitman), who has a very similar characterization, he was horrible. I think the biggest problem is that there is absolutely nothing menacing about him, or especially his eyes.
