windows 7 - how much ram do YOU recommend

I have 3, and I read an article that says 4 is recommended. Can you give me your recommendation?

Also, as an aside, how can I review my tech specs currently for the video card installed on my machine? I can't find it as I am new to Win7, and I already know how to review the tech specs online, and I know I can navigate to Device Manager, I just want to learn more about navigating in win7. If someone asked you what video card you have installed, where would you go to get the answer the fastest if you forgot what was installed? Thanks.

Re: windows 7 - how much ram do YOU recommend

Depends on if you're running 64 bit or 32 bit Windows 7. 32-bit can only recognize 3GB, so even if you have 4GB installed it will only recognize 3.

64bit OS will recognize up to 128GB of memory if I recall correctly, but really 4 should be fine.

In summary, 4 is better than 3, but only if you have 64bit OS. Otherwise it does't matter.

If you're running 64bit, go with 4GB's for sure.

In terms of the video card, like you already said, going to the Device Manager and clicking on Display Adapters is the fastest way I know of.

For most things you can get by with 3gb on a 64 bit OS. Now if you are a gamer, then yeah you will want more. But just for surfing the web, doing facebook game crap, etc, 3gb is enough.

Wow I was gonna make this thread tomorrow.

How will W7 32bit run with 2gb ram, core 2 duo 3ghz processor and 8800 GT video card? My specs in a nutshell and I was wanting to reinstall windows just because my machine has slowed down some due to me not keeping up with it software wise. Figured I would go clean install.

I want to be able to play games at the level I am now on XP which I think is pretty good. Right now all I will be playing in the near future though is Bioshock 2 and Fallout 3.

go to start and in the search type
                dxdiag

run the program and it will give you a detailed summary of all the components in your system.

I have win7-64 using 4gb ram and everything runs great.

@ollie - The 8800 GT was a great card, but it's definitely going to start showing its age. You could disable aero on win7 though and it would probably negate any difference between win7 and xp.

Thanks a lot for the responses. I'm basically trying to get Office to stop lagging on me, so I'm going to roll with 4gigs and stay away from gaming as my video card is something called 4250 HD by ATI.

I think maybe I will just get 2 more GB of ram or 4 new gb completely.

GO OWLS! I wasn't expecting there to be any of us on here either.

Extra ram should give you a nice boost.
