Both from different sellers, so I'll be expecting the Second City book on Tuesday and the SNL one on Wednesday. Can't wait.
Yeah I read the Oral History of SNL. I took me almost a year to read it. It's an easy book to read 5-10 pages at a time. It's a great book if you're a hardcore SNL fan. I enjoyed all the behind the scenes info.

Bill Hader was on the BS Report and he mentioned he has 1 year left on his contract.

I guess Us Weekly reported that Sudeikis, Wiig, and Samberg are all gone after this season. Obviously their people either don't comment or deny, but it's not surprising news (Samberg would be a little bit of a surprise though).

I knew Wiig and Sudeikis were leaving but I didn't know Samberg was also leaving. I'm going to really miss the digital shorts.

This string of generic Digital Shorts this season is making his (potential) loss easier to take. The only ones I can remember thinking were funny were the "Best Friends" one with Katy Perry and the one where Samberg interviews Drake.

Here's hoping for a good one tonight!

I wasn't expecting much from Vergara but I thought she did a pretty good job. Kate McKinnon got more airtime than Jay Pharoah in her first episode, lol. If Arimsen stays, I think Pharoah gets the boot. He's buried on the show and can't do anything outside of impressions.

Here's an interesting back and forth article about the state of SNL:
Just five shows remain in what will forever be known as "The Kristen Wiig Era." Sure, "SNL" isn't in any danger of being cancelled; but being irrelevant is perhaps a fate even worse than death for this show.

It cracks me up how people love to talk about the good ol days of "insert whatever year you want" SNL. The same people that bash the current SNL will be praising it 10 years from now and saying how good it was.

This is exactly what we were talking about a couple weeks ago re: hosts.

I haven't finished the article, but stopped in to leave that comment because at least someone else is noticing that:

                1. Hosts are being pushed to the back more than ever (and it's very concerning especially when the good hosts are being shoved).

It makes you wonder if perhaps SNL only wants to focus on their main players.

                2. The show would probably benefit from more appearances from their very talented hosts: Jon Hamm, Justin Timberlake, Emma Stone, Steve Martin, Alec Baldwin, Jimmy Fallon, Tiny Fey. Even Jim Carrey was very impressive last year/two years ago. That's 1/3 of the season. Gotta find a way to get those people to come back every single year. I'm sure there are 8 more former hosts that would do just as divine a job. Then you leave the other 1/3 of the season for new hosts so we can find new diamonds in the rough.

I expect that eventually Kristen Wiig and Fred Armisen will be good hosts. Their best skits would shine if packed into one episode. I don't know why Will Ferrell doesn't come around more often. I guess money and time has a lot to do with it.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

"You'll not find more penny-wise/pound-foolish behavior than in Major League Baseball." - Rob Neyer

                  Re: Saturday Night Live

I don't know if they want to push the cast ahead of any specific host, but maybe the host doesn't integrate themselves into the process enough to give the writers more to work with.

I'm reading the Second City book first, but I believe it's mentioned in "Live from New York" (and I've read this other places) that Tom Hanks really goes all in when he's hosting; meaning pulling all-nighters with the writers and tweaking things up to air to try and improve them. I think that comes across in his episodes too. You can tell which hosts really jump into it and which just go with what's brought to them - many of the former you just listed, CMH...though Hamm always struck me as a guy who just take what's given and nails it.

                  ---

That article was actually a really good read. Interesting thoughts on a lot of aspects - particularly (to me), the mention that a lot of sketches on the show seem to be written to "star" one person at a time. Maybe I'm clouded by reading the Second City book, but it's definitely worth noting. Trying to remember back when I watched a bunch of old SNL episodes on Netflix if it was similar then because I wasn't watching for it or anything at the time...and I want to say it wasn't. There were clear main and minor characters of course, but I don't recall a consistent push of anyone specific.

Reading that article, and I agree with the aside that Stefon's schtick is old. It reminds me of how they kept going back to Debbie Downer breaking (after the first one) and it seeming so fake. Every Stefon skit now involves him trying to contain his laughter and not only does it come off as fake, but it takes away some naturally funny moments of the skit.

The same goes on with the 'Scared Straight' spoof with Keenan. Every time it's over, Hader, Samberg and Sudekis just fake break to end it. I know that's not the subject of the article, but it's something I've had an issue with this season and I know they're faking it.

Nah the Stefon breaks are legit. Hader confirmed that the writers often slip new material into the teleprompter between dress rehearsal and the live show. Alot of times he's reading the material for the first time.

Feel the same way about Scared Straight. For example, the last time they ran it when Lohan hosted, they only broke when Sudekis screwed up and knocked the pencils off the desk.

Thats it in a nutshell. You cant convince me that Lohan, Barkley and Katy Perry were pulling all nighters. **** Barkley was calling a basketball game on Thursday night the week he was hosting.

I remember being amazed that he was spending a lot of time during an NFL pregame show on NBC THAT SATURDAY promoting his appearance later in the night.

I also agree with them going to the Stefon well too many times, but I love the character so I'm torn. Really surprised we didn't see it this past week for families looking to go out for Easter dinners...but I guess they could do it this week for spring time fun. Stefon definitely needs a break though.

I really hope they don't kill Drunk Uncle by running him into the ground. "He's still Cassius Clay to me, Seth" had me rolling.

Taran Killam doing Michael Cera, though, wins the day yet again.
