Trust me, plasma is the right technology for me. 24 Hz, reduced input lag (biggie for me... my previous LCD just sucked with this), better colors and blacks (for the lower price), et al are the kickers.

Your answer just means I'll stick to my program. It's never in the back of my mind when I'm enjoying the set. After watching a movie, I run counter slides when I'm away from the set or asleep. No bother for me whatsoever. When I'm gaming, I'm pixel-shifting.

I know a lot of people think I'm anal about things because of what I say on the boards. What is said on the boards is not how I live life, though. If I'm not posting about these questions, I'm just not posting in the thread. I'm sure some people wouldn't mind that, but the point is that I post for a reason. I'm not going to keep jumping in and say "I love my TV, I love my TV." Don't worry though, because I think that every time I watch it. Furthermore, at least now when someone like elTodd asks if they should worry about IR, I can say, "IR won't be a problem if you just watch 16x9 content or run slides after having static images on screen, but be understanding that in the long term, over time wear might start to show up on screen." That's all.

Again, thank you very much for the informative post. I'll gladly and respectfully go against your advice of switching this thing of beauty out for an LCD (which I already have sitting in my room as well), but I appreciate your concern.

I'm the same way. After getting a panasonic plasma, I'll never go back to LCD. Way better natural looking picture with inky blacks and very low input lag. Calibrated my set with Disney's World of wonder blu-ray calibration disk. Amazing picture with no color clipping. Don't miss LCD one bit.

What is a good 50 inch plasma for gaming (input lag is low) AND has a PC input? Price range 600-999.

I have used my PC input cable from my xbox and I have heard that is the way to go.

Is this still correct?

I'm going to assume that 1080p is also a requirement. That being said, a 50" 1080p plasma is going to run in the $800+ range. This LG is on Amazon.com (which would be $750 shipped)

I have an 2 year old LG plasma and still love it.

There MIGHT be some deals on a Panasonic or Samsung around Super Bowl time. That's when tv manufacturers will be rolling out their 2012 models and looking to move the 2011 models.

You don't want to use VGA anymore with the Xbox if you have one that has an HDMI out.

Well, it all depends on what kind of TV you have, what you use it for, and how much you care about color control and digital audio.

If you only have a 720p native television, VGA might be the way to go. It can output a resolution of 1368x768, which would be a 1:1 mapping on the screen, while HDMI (or 720p for that matter) does 1280x720 with an overscan to fill the screen at its full resolution. Also, I don't know if it's changed since then, but the only way to upscale DVDs through the 360 is via VGA input.

However, the downfalls are that you are using the PC input source (which locks a few picture controls such as color variance, maybe tint as well), and that you can only output analog audio. Now when I used a 360 on my TV, I would run the audio into the television, then out of it using an optical cable and into my receiver. I don't know if that improves the sound over just plugging the analog composite audio cables into my receiver, but I don't really think it could hurt it, either.

At any rate, the VGA source is technically at a higher resolution for a 720p native TV (not so for 1080p, but I don't know if he's going for that at his specified price range), so it's not exactly correct to make the blanketed statement that HDMI is officially the superior cable to use for Xbox 360.

Ok you guys are awesome first off. Thank you for the great links. I want the perspective of folks who play games, because I will be playing a lot of COD and don't want lag disadvantage..etc.

My current TV is a 720P vizio and is 5 years old. I do VGA in and use RCA cables for the sound. It gives me dolby surround that way.

But if I get a new one like the ones linked above, you all suggest I start using an HDI cable instead correct?

That price range and size is perfect. I had not thought about LG. Also I will be buying in mid to late Jan most likely.

I just updated my 50" plasma. Wanted to know what was updated.

Its starting to piss me off lately. Ive had the tv since october, but Im beginning to wonder if this is something that i should call panny about, or that they can fix in a firmware.

You are under manufacturer's warranty. I would call Panasonic about the issue. See what they can do for you

Strangely, they addressed this in the VT30. Technically, this isn't a "fault" of the television. Panasonic and Samsung both have this in their newest sets to meet energy standards. Although, just like the eco technology stuff, it would be nice if there was simply a way to turn it off. For me (Samsung PN59D7000), it doesn't really happen unless I'm watching 16:9 movies, in which case it's still far and few between for it to be a huge hassle. But, it's still prevalent, and enough people have reported it for both Samsung and Panasonic to be putting the option in for all televisions.

well, just spent an hour on the phone with panny.
they are sending a tech out here to fix the fluctuation brightness issue. i guess its a 10 minute procedure they do to the tv.

Oh well, good to see you're getting it addressed!

Not so fast, my friend. The fix was either an A-Board swap or a SD card firmware update, not the firmware you can download via the Wi-Fi dongle at home, but one a Panasonic tech had to install.



My VT30 didn't have the issue as it was an August or later build. An easy service menu check confirmed it. At least Panasonic issued a fix, though, for those that notice it. You'd think such things would happen more often with the ease of firmware updates these days.
