Re: HBO: Band of Brothers vs. The Pacific

The Pacific was a different setting of the war, and focused on different aspects. BoB got to be Saving Private Ryan for 10 episodes. The Pacific was more of a horror story than BoB. And it focused on two characters, while giving little supporting parts around them, while BoB focused on mostly the entire Easy Company. I feel the second half of the Pacific provided better episodes than BoB did at any point. It just started off a little slow and different.

They're both outstanding, it's hard to pick one over the other. I think from an emotional standpoint, you can't beat the Pacific due to the second half of the series.

Band of Brothers was much better. The Pacific wasn't bad it has nothing on BoB.

Pacific hasn't reeled me in like Band of Brothers did for some reason.

I think the Pacific will find its greatness with time. I thought it was downright below average upon the initial viewing. You start to understand it better on multiple viewings. The episode where Helldane and a few other of the supporting characters are killed was the finest of the series, and better than any episode of BoB, in my opinion. There were some really fine characters on the Pacific, they just weren't given the screen time that BoB gave their guys, since the series wasn't about them as a whole. Snafu was the only supporting guy they really let shine, and shine he did.

Band of Brothers >>>>>>> The Pacific. That being said, I liked the Pacific as well.

The Pacific was awesome. Robert Leckie's story was really engaging.

I liked the Pacific a little more than band of brothers, mainly because I have seen so much on the European theatre of WWII and not much on the Pacific. Band of Brothers felt just like another Private Ryan where there was really no movie I could compare the Pacific to.

Re: HBO: Band of Brothers vs. The Pacific

I loved Band of Brothers. After watching it the first time I immediately watched it again. Then I bought it. I've watched episodes now and then on The History channel, but haven't got back to sitting through the whole series a third time. Maybe soon.

I found The Pacific last week at the library and just finished watching it. In the beginning it was hard to follow the characters, but that changed as it went on and keyed on a few individual marines. Their stories were compelling, but I liked it better how Band of Brothers followed the one group throughout the war.

The Pacific was more gruesome, so I'd be less inclined to watch it again. Like someone else mentioned, there was a little too much time spent with the non-war stuff (Australia and War Bonds). I would have rather had some episodes that featured a naval-aviator and naval-air battles since they were big part of the war in the Pacific.

I don't plan on buying The Pacific, but I do plan on reading the books by Robert Leckie and Eugene Sledge.

I watched all the extra features last night. It really helped put the whole series in perspective.
Now I'm thinking its not fair to compare the two series. The warfare in the Pacific was different. Just more brutal. On the one hand it makes it less desireable to replay, but on the other hand it should be seen if you want to get a feeling for what these Marines had to endure.

I thought the Pacific did an excellent job of showing what sacrifices were made, what had to be endured and how easy it could be to utterly fall apart if you weren't mentally strong.

Everyone should be educated on the sacrifices made by these people so we can enjoy the lives we have today.

When I was in college, I was a bellhop at a hotel that hosted an anniversary meeting of the Michigan "island hoppers" in WWII. I stayed after work and talked to these guys for hours as they told stories of being 17 to 21 years old and storming those beaches and being attacked in pitch darkness. I couldn't fathom that then and I still can fathom that now....

The conditions that the soldiers were fighting in during the Pacific were terrifying. You never know where the enemy is, you're fighting an enemy who will kill you at all costs, give their own lives to kill you, you have no water, limited ammo, cut off from the rest of the world. It's pretty scary to think they actually went through this.
