    TiVo and other DVRs

    Alright everyone.

I'm looking for some help. Now I may not be the smartest guy in the world but I just assumed that when you buy a TiVo type machine that once you had the machine.. that was it.

After looking on Best Buy's website at their TiVos, I noticed it says there is a $19.99 per month fee. Well what's the point then? Can't you just get one from the cable company for $5-10 per month?

I assumed that once you bought the TiVo/DVR from the store for $100+ that that was it.. no more fees.

Are all of the TiVo/DVRs this way?

All the Tivo's have a fee, whether it be a 1-time lifetime fee, a yearly fee, or a monthly fee. The newest promotion is that the boxes only cost $100 (down from $300 I think), but they got rid of the lifetime option and the monthly fee increased from $13 to $20. You can buy boxes on ebay or elsewhere with a lifetime subscription, but they'll typically cost $500+. The upside of Tivo of course is that you own the box instead of renting it, and the Tivo interface is better than any of the cable provided boxes.

If you're only paying $5 a month for a HD DVR, I'd just stick with that. I've had Tivo and loved it, but I couldn't justify it at that price point. FIOS charges $15 for a HD DVR though, which makes Tivo more tempting.

DirectTV lets you have their best HD-DVR for free and with no monthly fee.

Just bought a tivo bolt and tivo mini. Hardwired entire house with cat6e. Love it! Save $30 a month on cable bill and tivo is so much better then twc dvr. With the integrated streaming services and 4k...great pickup for anyone looking for something different.
