What is "burning in"? Do you mean kind of like a car where you don't gun it at 100MPH with a brand new engine?

I guess you just moderately let it play things softly until, well, they break in.

From my understanding it's similar. The headphones that I just got apparently sound different from when they're out of the box and after about 20-40 hrs of use or after they burn in.

I never would have figured that to be the case. Good looking out then, I'll make sure to consider that when I invest in some $100+ headphones (that'll be the day).

If you are looking for some good headphones cheap watch amazon.com around the holidays. I got my Sennheiser hd448s for 65 bucks (over half off) from there around black friday

The way I was told to break mine in was to hook them up to a source that could be on for 24 hours and tuned to FM radio but not on a station that you receive just one that is all static or white noise

IMO it doesn't seem to make much difference what you play through them, just hook them up to a source and play anything at reasonable volume. If you want to get technical you should probably play pink noise since it's flat, but I've done pink noise and just set a player on random and haven't seen a difference. Oh, and unless you want to hear it, I typically put them under a pillow (or at least I did before I set up my listening room).
