    Your favorite monopoly in Monopoly?

I love the game of Monopoly, though most can't stand it. I just bought Monopoly Streets for the 360 and my girlfriend and I have been having some heated battles. I've been playing since I was young, and have always been partial to certain properties while not so fond of others. I was wondering what everyone's favorite color group was. For me it's in my avy, though I wish I had a better picture. There are some really nice ones of Park Place and Boardwalk (my second favorite).

This. Not as expensive as Boardwalk/Park Place, but with hotels can bankrupt most players. Plus there's 3 spaces instead of 2.

1- Orange (St. James, Tennessee, NY). Easy to build up at $100/house. Extra chances of hitting them after landing in jail from the "Go To Jail" space and cards.

I like the Purples/Browns and Oranges. The Purples/Browns are cheap to build a monopoly on, but can be extremely lucrative in the end. We had a Monopoly tournament during a class at school and I destroyed everyone with a monopoly on the Purples/Browns.

Re: Your favorite monopoly in Monopoly?

Here's a list of my favorites in order...

            1. Oranges: These are low risk, high reward properties. At only 100 dollars a house they are dirt cheap to build on and almost a guarantee to be hit. The "go back three spaces" card can land you on New York and you are a 6, 8, or 9 away from jail. Far and away the best Monopoly, IMO.

            2. Blues: My second favorite for the prestige value alone. The pros are that with the even build rule you can build up to hotels fast as there are only two properties to worry about, and if you do, and are lucky enough to get landed on, you can bankrupt a player easily. Another pro is the "advance to bankruptcy" card that ensures someone eventually lands on your big boy. The cons are that once you nab the property you can barely afford to build on it. Also, if people make it around the board without advancing to the nearest whatever, going to jail, advancing to Go, etc., there are only two spaces to land on at the very end of the board.

            3. Railroads: If you can get all 4, it is a nice steady income. Even if you only have three, you are a constant threat. This monopoly is one that you get whenever you can as you are almost always assured to make your money back and then some. Being your own personal "Income Tax" every ten spaces and taking people's Go money is a great feeling. They also have the added benefit of giving you "Free Parking" every 10 spaces.

            4. Light Blues: These were never a favorite of mine, but in writing this up, they should be. Virtually nothing to build on, can take people's money as they come around Go (around 600 dollars when built up), and are almost always landed on when people are sent to Go. Also, due to the low cost of building, you can control the number of houses and hotels available by building up this property. This is a great second monopoly to own.

            5. Reds: The pros of the reds are that they are the easiest to land on aside from the Oranges. The cons are that it costs 150 a house to build on, and you make less on them than the Yellows. Still, the fact that like the Oranges, people are constantly lined up to land on them, makes them a good monopoly to build your empire on. Also, has the added benefit of the advance to Illinois Ave. card.

            6. Yellows: These are almost tied with the Reds for me. The chances of landing on these are less than the Red, but you'll make more and the cost of building is the same (150 a pop). Again, not a bad place to start your empire. Very middle of the pack monopoly.

            7. Light Purples/ Pinks: This monopoly is a good one to have due to its low cost and low risk factor, but it seems to be skipped over a lot as people either hit the Light Blues before it or the Oranges after it. This can be a viable primary monopoly (with the advance to St. Charles card), but is a great secondary one.

            8. Greens: The cost to acquire all of these properties will run you a little over 900 dollars. That's more than half your money invested just in this property. It'll cost another three grand to build up hotels. However, if you do, you will be a HUGE threat. The risk is bankrupting yourself in the process. This is actually a great secondary monopoly to build on slowly as you make money from other monopolies. A pro is that these seem to be landed on a lot. While it's only one extra space, it seems to be landed on much more than the Blues.

            9. Dark Purples/ Browns: As a kid, I used to love this property (it was top 3). I'd love combining it with the Blues and owning the Go corner. Now, I realize that while you always buy it, due to it's insanely low cost and low risk factor, it's not a must have monopoly as it's rarely landed on and will rarely bankrupt someone when it is.

            10. Utilities. I never buy these. There's only two spots one can land on, and the most someone can make at a time is 120 dollars assuming a roll of double sixes. I'll usually throw these in a deal or get them as a throw-in in a deal. Unlike the railroads, I don't see much use for them.

              Yep.

I just crunched the numbers and the Green properties are the best "bang for the buck" in the game.

Easily the Oranges. They are the most likely to be landed on in a trip around the board, and can be built up to three houses (the amount you should build to immediately) cheaply.

The Reds are my second favorite as they are the second-most likely to be landed on in a trip around the board.

If you own both of these monopolies in that corner, you are simply unlucky if you don't win.

Your expected return on investment with those properties is not very good actually.

Every year our family vacation is on the beach in San Diego, and on the nine hour drive there we play some PSX classics while in the car (my two sisters and I), one of them being Monopoly. We always seem to end up going for the same kinds of properties if we can.

My main go-for set are the railroads because they are on every block, you can mortgage them for a bit more cash each, and you don't have to pay for houses/hotels just to get paid a good amount each time someone lands on them. My older sister likes the dark greens and the utilities. My little sister likes the magentas and the dark blue (but who doesn't?).

I have a book at home that breaks this all down statistically. I can't wait to bust it out again. I'll post the info (I may have messed up the probability of landing on Orange/Red).

Of course, your strategy and which Monopolies you want to go after are also driven by whether you play by the actual rules or if fines are paid to the middle and picked up by a person when they land on Free Parking. When playing with friends, we are cutthroat and I refuse to play with that rule. But in fun games like at family gatherings, we play that.

The problem with money in free parking is that it bails people out and elongates the game by putting more money into circulation. At Christmas 5 people from our family sat down and played - it took 4 1/2 hours!

That's awesome. Let me know the name of the book. I might purchase it just to read for fun (not like I'm ever going to enter a tournament or anything).

We used to play the 500 dollar payout from Free Parking, so imagine how long those games took. Also, I never knew that auctioning off properties was a standard rule. I've never played that way until I played the video games and had to have that rule.

I love the game, but man I get way too competitive. In highschool, fights were started over this game. I once got into a fist fight, and one time, my boy chucked the game at my head and it went out the window. it was raining Monopoly money outside, lol. I've gotten better with age, but I still need to learn not to take it so serious (says the guy who wants to buy a book).

Monopoly Streets is the best videogame version I've seen to date. Love how you can set every rule to whatever you want it to be. A great version of the game that has been played a lot in my house since Xmas.
