I prefer the light blues and the dark purples/browns...you can usually get them cheap early on in trades or auctions, develop them quickly, and then screw people over when they make the "Go" turn.

I've been playing CPU games in my spare time, and I just won a game doing that.

I traded for the Light Blues early, bought both Browns and people with higher monopolies couldn't build because they kept hitting me (with hotels). When I bankrupted someone I got Boardwalk and I traded the computer the Green they needed to complete the monopoly for Park Place. They accepted but didn't have money to build. I had enough for hotels (all off money made from the Light Blues, Browns, and Railroads) and promptly put them up.

The last player never made it to the lavish Blues before going bankrupt on the same crappy property I built my fortune on.

WHAT IS THE BEST MONOPOLY?

Obviously, no monopoly is perfect for all game situations; however, one monopoly stands out as being the most versatile: the New York monopoly.

The houses for the New York monopoly are cheap enough that they can be developed almost as fast as the lighter monopolies. At the same time, the expected rents from this monopoly ranks New York in the upper tier.

When in doubt about the best monopoly for you in a particular game, aim to get the New York monopoly.

Buy unowned property if:
• It is in a color group where no other player owns property.
• It gives you a second or third property in a given color group.
• It prevents a competitor from monopolizing a color group.
• It is an orange property (block this color group whenever possible).
o This is a beneficial group to have because people coming out of jail will pass through purple, orange and red property groups, with orange having the highest probability as well as a low cost.
• There are, of course, some exceptions to these rules. For example, you don't have to block a group when two players each own a property of a group and share a valuable group between them.

The other night my wife played the computer on Monopoly Streets and came away with the reds and yellows. Needless to say, she quickly bankrupted everyone once she built up. Just owned one whole side of the board.
