Sprint raising data plans by $10 a month.

Looks like all of the cell phone companies are going to raise rates/change rates.

I already have the Evo so it doesn't effect me.

It will when you get a new phone.

I'm already paying the $10 (and have been for months) so I don't see how. Plus, I love this phone and will use it until it completely dies.

I'm confused by this. So nothing really changes if you currently have a crappy non smartphone and will be upgrading in a couple of months to a 4g evo, right? You had a $10 charge starting last year and that is still true? With upgrade comes the increase.

But before this change, there was never a premium charge on other smart phones, so an upgrade last year to a normal smart phone would have cost you nothing, but now you have that $10 dollar charge... It kind of sets you up to force or GET you to buy the EVO right away. If I'm being charged $10 bucks no matter what on these smart phones, I may as well try and get the best one..

          Is that correct logic?

Re: Sprint raising data plans by $10 a month.

Before this change, the $10 premium charge only applied to smartphones with 4G capability. After this change, it will apply to all smartphones going forward.

            - Those who currently own a non-4G smartphone will not see the $10 charge until their contract is renewed (assuming they still want the smartphone package)
            - Those who currently own a 4G smartphone will see no change, as the $10 premium is already in effect for all 4G phones.
            - Those who use non-smartphones will not be affected by it whatsoever.

The ones this will hurt the most are the Blackberry users and WP7 users. It's basically incentive to jump to a 4G phone, which is what a lot of people are planning to do after hearing this news. "If I have to pay the $10 premium I might as well get my money's worth" type of thing, which is what Ruben was alluding to.

But trust and believe that even with the $10 premium, your plan will still be cheaper than AT&T and Verizon plans.

All of that being said, I think this is awful business strategy (once again) by Sprint. Other carriers are picking up steam with their 4G lineups, and Verizon obviously made the huge iPhone announcement, then Sprint retaliates by raising their prices? What? Here's hoping they have a major trick up their sleeve soon or they are going to be left behind.

Hmm, since I'm a Sprint Premier customer and I'm eligible for an upgrade in March I wonder if I could upgrade now? Anyone ever been able to upgrade early? I want to upgrade my rooted Hero to the Evo. This increase is what they have been forcing on 4G phones aka the Evo.

                    23% here.

They are supposed to announce an industry first announcement on Feb 7th. I think it might be unlimited data on multiple devices. If you get a tablet for example you don't have to pay for an extra data plan if you already have one for your phone etc.

So if I upgrade to an Evo from a Hero my bill will go up $20 instead of just $10 for the 4G phone? Upgrade isn't until March '11.

Thanks HotSauce, I was gonna say, I might stick with my Hero if it did.
