    Any Vinyl Collectors?

So I have always wanted to collect vinyl and have been fascinated with record players/turntables. With some birthday and Christmas money I got a cheap turntable from Amazon (Audio-Technica AT-LP60) and a few LPs and singles. Even running through old cheap, Dell computer speakers, I am really enjoying listening to music on it. Does anyone else collect vinyl or use a turntable to listen to their music? What kind of system do you have and where do you typically get new music (online especially)?

Edit: If interested here is the model I purchased: http://www.amazon.com/Technica-AT-LP...5640224&sr=8-1
As the reviews say, it was really easy to set up, even though I had never touched a turntable before, and although I have nothing aside from CDs and Mp3s to compare the sound quality to, I think it sounds good, although I am far from an audiophile.

btw: I did a forum search and did not find a thread on the topic already and am moderately sure that this is the forum it is supposed to go in.

I don't collect them but still have some from the 80's, mostly Hard Rock / Heavy Metal . Records were always my favorite.

I have a VPI turntable with a Shelter cartridge that I never use, I much prefer the convenience of digital.

For the most part, the only time I am listening to music that isn't one of my portables I am in the middle of one of my cluster headaches and the last thing I want to do is fiddle with a record and turntable.

I have a few "vintage" pieces of vinyl, though doubt they're worth much. As far as turntables go, I do remember that it was suggested you stay away from the belt driven ones and get the direct drives as the belts could potentially stretch and loosen over time. Technics direct drives were the popular models.

Audiophiles will want a belt drive, cuts down on background noise. The higher end turntables are almost exclusively belt drive, with the top end having features like a toothed belt or even the recent advent of the magnetic drive to completely isolate the platter (with high end prices to match, as much as $250,000).

DJs will want direct drive for the torque and durability.

Your average listener either is fine, but a belt drive may need adjusting after a while so most opt for direct drive.

i got into mixing about 15 years ago and bought a real nice $800 technics ... those days are long gone but i still listen to vinyl (mostly 90's alternative 7") from time to time ... however, i have also converted all my exclusive vinyl to mp3 for listening in a more convenient manner.
