Is Edge Lit LCD worth the added price?

Looking at getting a new tv (42" Vizio), and they have them where the edge lit is 80ish more on sale at Costo vs. the non edge lit one.

What's the difference between normal LCD and edge lit? I'll be gaming and watching movies on it, so does it matter either way?

*edit* I guess it's a edge lit LED LCD...is it worth it for that vs a normal LCD at 70 bucks less? I'm looking at 579 vs. 649 for the edge lit LED LCD. Don't want to get something that ends up crappy for gaming or whatnot.

Oooh, non edge lit has a 5ms response time, edge lit has a 8ms response time...now I'm not so sure it's worth it...

Just moving my 37" Vizio to the bedroom so good opportunity to get a bit bigger of a tv. Thanks!

I played 2k on my 26inch LED Vizio and EWWW

I was literally sick at the look of the fast movement... It was awful man

I took it back and got a 32 inch LCD and am just as if not happier with the decision

I liked the thin-ness of the LED and how the remote worked with it but other than that the picture benefit
    wasnt THAT great IMO

Someone else here, Gamecock I believe did the same thing as me

Yeah, I'm not reading great stuff on the LED, so I'm just gonna stick to a 42" LCD similar to what my parents got last summer.

Thanks for the heads up though! I don't really care if it's that much thinner, and the other one seems to get better reviews/conversation on avsforum.

Just wanted to make sure LED wasn't some awesome thing I shouldn't pass up on.

Its new tech which is why they can make them thinner and lighter which is really nice, but it stops there to me as far as true benefits are concerned

Now Some say it doesnt matter and maybe it doesn't but manufacturer specs listings say the lfiespan is much shorter than a traditional LCD

Either way I doubt you'll regret not spending the extra dough

LED backlighting without local dimming, either fully array or edge-lit is a waste of money.

I believe Vizio's do local dimming. I know my LED did and so does my 32 inch

Yep. I wasn't impressed with the picture quality on that particular Vizio. LED, when done correctly, looks amazing.

The main thing you're looking for in improvement is the black levels. A very good LED is going to have black levels close to that of a plasma.

Yeah, I am fine with the cheaper one...

It's a upgrade (faster, better resolution, etc) than my 3ish year old 37" Vizio, so I shouldn't have any issues with anything big in that regards...just a better quality LCD, so I won't have that "man this sucks" type of moment when you swap brands and it looks different. I looked at the tv at Walmart and gonna buy it at Costco tomorrow (I like their warranties and whatnot).

I didn't see many good reviews about that LED, sounds kinda crappy with edge lights showing sometimes and whatnot.
