    Connecting Laptop to HDTV

    Does anyone do this with their laptop and TV?

    I purchased a new Toshiba laptop last night and it has a HDMI slot on the side. I've also got a Toshiba REGZA LED TV, but I'm not sure if it's advisable to try and hook it up. I've heard rumors and I've seen someone at work mess up the TV in the break room by attempting the same thing, but it was a HP lap top connecting to a Sony Bravia. I've been reading through the manual, but it doesn't give much information... only on connecting it to a HD monitor with HDMI.

    Just wondering if anyone has any experience with this sort of thing. Thanks.

      I do it all the time to watch NHL Gamecenter Live on my TV. It's really easy...all you need is the HDMI cable and to make some minor changes to the display settings of your laptop. Here's a great & easy tutorial that walks you through it:

          It's simple. Just plug it up to the tv and set your tv to that HDMI port. The tv should recognize it instantly and basically become a big monitor. I do it all the time. I watch stuff I've recorded to the laptop via my Hava Titanium Wifi setup box.

          Only potential concern is when using a new plasma. Desktops/Laptops tend to have a lot of static images. This could lead to some image retention since the screen is always completely filled.

              Thanks for the feedback.

              I was just concerned with the possibility of frying my TV. I figured if it had an HDMI input and my laptop had an output.. it should work just fine.

                  I did this recently with my LCD I put in the bedroom when I got a new living room tv.

                  I just had to fiddle and get the best resolution for my laptop and it works great. I'm able to use my slingbox and watch tv in both rooms...

                  Next up is grabbing a cheap wireless keyboard/mouse combo so I can just control it all from far away.

                          Nice! I think I'll get that for the bedroom...

                          I'm getting a regular wireless for the PS3 (and will try that in the bedroom for now), but I didn't know this existed. I'll probably end up getting one for that cheap.

                              Whatever you go with, just be sure it is backlit.

                              I have a nice slim HP wireless keyboard. But it is not backlit, doesn't have mouse function and still too big for what I was going for. Bought the Rii, but was too lazy to ship the HP back to Amazon.

                                  I just got a logitech dinovo for my media center. i'm able to scroll through all my ripped blu rays easily now through windows media player. Kinda expensive $115 on amazon but easily best accessory i bought for my media center.

                                      Yeah you can hook up your pc to the tv with a DVI cable as well. My new PC has both outputs on it.

                                          Only thing with DVI is that it's video only. You'd also have to run RCA cables with one of these for audio: <img src=http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/318Zr4WWC%2BL._SL500_AA300_.jpg>

                                              Yep. Unless your PC sound card as an optical out jack on it.
