Metallica has a 'Secret Project' in the works

The thrash metal kings are heading back into the studio in May for what guitarist Kirk Hammett describes as a project a bit out of the ordinary.

“We want to record it in two weeks,” Hammett told Rolling Stone. We had planned on doing it in March, but we pushed it back to May. I don’t want to give too much away, but it’s not really 100 percent a Metallica record. It’s a recording project, let’s put it that way. Without getting too deep into it, it’s more a recording project than a bona fide Metallica album. Whether or not we can pull it off in just two weeks remains to be seen.”

I have no idea, but if it results in new Metallica music that sounds like DM....I'll be happy.

Agreed. Death Magnetic was a solid album and let me just say that the boys can still bring it live. Saw them on the DM tour in 2008 (Election Night of all nights) and it was a great night.

They need to make whatever music they're passionate about making. Death Magnetic felt like a half-assed attempt to please the fans who had been longing for a remake of the first four albums.

There half *** attempts are better than most bands full attempts. I used to talk to Kirk when I was a kid, grew up with my brother and in fact came to my brother's funeral. And after hearing all the problems Dave and James had with each other I would be amaze to see them do something together.

As long as it's good, then I'm good with whatever the secret is.

Death Magnetic was awesome and would love another album to follow that same structure. DM, to me was more of a hybrid between their earlier albums and the Load-era albums. It was good stuff and hopefully this is what we get from them.

I initially liked DM, but the tin can drumming sounds got really annoying.

The drums didn't bother me in DM, but the drums sounded like tin can drumming in St. Anger. Not sure if you are mixing up the albums, but they were bad in St. Anger.

Yeah, the snare was tuned oddly in St. Anger.

I actually liked St. Anger. Haha.

And I agree with you guys about DM, great album. I still jam to it in my car from time to time.

I gave up on Metallica after the Black Album. I gave Death Magnetic a fighting chance, but after many listens it sounded forced and grew old fast. As someone else said, an attempt to please longtime fans.

As for this new project, if Kirk says it's not the usual Metallica album, that should throw out it sounding anything like Death Magnetic or being done with Mustaine. I'm gonna guess they are going country.

According to The Pulse Of Radio, METALLICA will not revert to their ten-year-old sessions from Presidio in San Francisco for their new album. The group's drummer Lars Ulrich states that the band did not use any of those 'lost' recordings on their 2008 album, "Death Magnetic", nor do they wish to revisit them for new material they will work on this spring.

Ulrich told The Pulse Of Radio, "There's certainly no plans right now. The Presidio was a real awkward time as we were kind of getting our feet wet again and when we were doing the whole 'Death Magnetic' stuff, we didn't go back and wade through hours and hours of Presidio stuff to try and see what could be resurrected."

The Presidio sessions were abandoned after frontman James Hetfield entered rehab for an extended period. When the band later regrouped, they started fresh and recorded the album, "St. Anger".

METALLICA guitarist Kirk Hammett told RollingStone.com that the band will hit the studio in May to begin work on a mysterious new "recording project" that may not exactly be an album. Hammett elaborated, "We want to record it in two weeks. We had planned on doing it in March, but we pushed it back to May. I don't want to give too much away, but it's not really 100 percent a METALLICA record. It's a recording project, let's put it that way. Without getting too deep into it, it's more a recording project than a bona fide METALLICA album. Whether or not we can pull it off in just two weeks remains to be seen."

One question, however, is how any new record would come out, since Ulrich told The Pulse Of Radio that METALLICA's contract with Warner Music Group is now done. "I do believe that we are without a record contract for the next record, so we'll come around to that one," he said. "I certainly at this point cannot say anything about what's gonna happen with the next record. It's not a conversation we've had, or at least not any conversation I've been part of in the last couple of years, and it's kind of cool to have nothing but options. So we'll see how it plays out."
