It's a new technology and not everyone has $3000 to spend at will. I bought a new house and had a much larger family room. The 46" was too small (about 19ft away in a 25ft room), so I bought a 63" 3DTV. I figured, if it takes off, I have a very good 3DTV and outstanding 2DTV. If not, I have an outstanding 2D HDTV.

The funny thing I've seen about 3D so far is those that have it, enjoy it and those that don't, tend to find every reason/excuse as to why it's not good and won't last. A guy at work gave me crap for it for 1 month straight until he finally said "Ya know, I'm just giving you crap because I can't afford to buy a 3DTV and would love to have one". I'm sure others feel the same way and I'm sure there are others who just don't like it and never will. That's fine - it's not for everyone, but let's not discount it as it does have it's place.
I'm not putting anybody down who enjoys 3D but like laserdiscs and SACD it's a niche market. I'm suprised you know that many people that have 3DTV's because I don't anyone that does and they could all easily afford it but they have no enthusiasm for them whatsoever. So could I but I'm not a fan of 3D at least not enough to replace a TV I'm perfectly happy with now.

Thta's another problem for 3D. It's not enough of a lure for the average consumer who can afford it to upgrade because the TV they have now is a 50 inch+ HDTV. The TV doesn't have a shelf life like a computer for them. With a newer technology you have to get sales going briskly in a relatively small amount of time to justify the manufacturing costs. If sales growth is modest then there's no reason to increase production to drive down costs.

The vast majority of people don't do research on TV's, they buy what's on sale and if they recognize the brand name. Hidef was a no brainer because the improvement was obvious and there's no way you couldn't love it. That's hardly the case for 3D.

I guess I run with a different crowd. Off the top of my head, I know 7 families that have a 3DTV (not counting OS members). All have been thrilled with their experience so far and wouldn't think to call it a niche market. IMO, it's coming whether some want to believe it or not. Hell, the term "3D" is already taking off in commercials for random products similar to what "HD" did. Just today I saw a commercial for "3D toothpaste" and for a "3D car". The media is going to make sure 3D survives and does well...cable companies sure wouldn't be trying hard to get 3D content on the air if it were the other way around. It takes time...just like HD. I remember having only 5-6 HD channels out of the gate. Now I have more than I can count.

I agree that the vast majority of people don't do research on TV's (it's why many choose Sony over better TV's). Not to mention, if people did research Best Buy would never sell anything because most brick and mortar stores are ripoffs (HDMI cable for $40+??? www.monoprice.com will get the same quality/length cable for $5). Anyhow, Best Buy was selling my TV for $3600 with no glasses or anything else. I bought it for $3000 online at Cleveland Plasma with free shipping, 2 pair of glasses and the Shrek Bundle ($400 value) and a Samsung BD-C6900 3D Blu-Ray player ($369 value). Really, a no brainer for something with a PQ this good.

Back to 3D... If you don't like it, that's your prerogative. Like I said, it's not for everyone, but it does have it's place and I think it's here to stay. Perhaps I jumped on the train early, but I'd do it 100x over - even if my TV started to sell for $1000 tomorrow. Off to watch Clash of the Titans in 3D with my wife.

I think 3D gaming is awesome. Not every game is great but games like motorstorm get a huge boost. Even 2D to 3D conversion can be cool with flying and racing games.

What is not cool is the blu ray 3d prices. They should be priced the same as the regular blu rays but instead they are 49.99 retail! You can find deals but I believe this is the true **** fail for 3D. Exclusives blu rays are also a fail.

At Best Buy the 3D Blurays are 39.99 BUT that's still too salty IMO

My roommate plays GT5 in 3D and while it looks good, it's not enough for me to recommend a friend to buy 3D.

However, the Killzone 3 demo is awesome in 3D. Maybe it's because it's more action oriented, but if they have more games like this coming out in 3D, then I would definitely say it's worth getting.

The suggested retail price for major releases on the best buy website for Tron, Despicable Me, Saw, Caroline ect is 49.98. Thats just crazy!
