Keeping my old number and switching to verizon

I'm planning signing up for a plan with verizon while porting my old number over. I'm doing it online. It's asking for my old account number and stuff, so I gave them all that, but I'm wondering when does the process actually start, since I'm going to have to wait for a few days for my new phone to get here, I'd like to be able to use my current phone still in the mean time. So if I place my order now do they start porting it over now, or is that not until I actually get and activate my new phone?

I'm not sure you can even use another provider's phone with Verizon? The other companies use a SIM card

Not sure how the process works online. When I ported my number from AT&T to Verizon, I did it over the phone and the process was done within minutes.

I'm getting a verizon phone, I'm just trying to keep my old number, which the site says I am able to do. I'm just wondering how long the process will take online, because if I'm going to be without a phone for a few days, might have to wait a little bit for a time thats more convenient to not have a phone. The site says it will take from a few hours to a full day, but since it's asking me for the information now, I'm not sure if that's from now, and I'll have to wait until I get the phone to complete the process, or if that's from when I get the phone, and I could still use my current phone until then.

It all depends on who is working the system that day and how many other numbers they have to port over currently. The longest it ever took for me was 2 days......The fastest was 5 minutes.

Looked around the internet a little, and sort of got my answer. Sounds like they normally port your number over after you activate the phone, but some people have reported having their number ported over while they were still waiting to get the phone. Best thing to do is to just order it with a new number, and then call when you actually get the phone to port it. Unfortunately, i found this out after I already orderedBut its supposed to ship tomorrow with overnight shipping, so if it's an issue it shouldn't be for that long.

your old phone should work fine until you receive and activate the new phone. I have done this several times. Usually you have a number to call to activate the phone and once it is activated your old one will not work.
