Re: An Idiot Abroad
I loved the podcasts, radio shows, etc, etc, etc but I hated this.
I went in thinking this would be awesome, Karl going around to these ancient and interesting sites and giving his unique take on it all, but that's not at all what I got. You never get Karl's view on anything, he's too busy being miserable. Karl never really gets exposed to anything but squalor, because that's what is going to make him miserable. Ricky is too busy being a douche to let this show get anywhere. The China episode was good, really good, but it just fell completely flat from there. Ricky comes off horribly calling from a plane while Karl is on the bus in India, the mock abduction in Jordan was asinine, but the worst was seeing where they purposely tried to perpetrate a fraud in Egypt*. Mexico wasn't so bad, but mostly because everything Ricky tried to do to make Karl miserable failed.
*In Egypt, when Karl first enters the hotel he walks through what we are led to believe is a metal detector, it was a laminate archway that beeped as Karl went through. The camera went to a man sleeping beside it that we were supposed to think was the lax security. The camera later shifts to the other side showing Karl's face and in the background you see two men carrying off the fraudulent metal detector. Lame. I stopped watching once they put Karl with the kooky nutjobs and passed this week. -

I just discovered this a few nights ago and have watched the India and Jordan episodes. I think it has it's really funny moments, and I'll watch them all eventually.Comment

Re: An Idiot Abroad
Well, to be fair, the whole premise of the show is Ricky Gervais being a douche to and being amused by this guy. He makes that clear enough.Comment
