Question for ya'll: Am I the only one who judges an Album on "Travel Quality" or am I just ******* weird? LOL by that I mean, like with me I'm the type of person that travels ALOT(3-4+ Hr Road Trips) and if I can put an album on my Ipod and let it play from start to finish without skipping more than 3-4 tracks on it, then it has good Travel Quality. But if it something where I can only play like 3-4 tracks off it, then I don't play it unless my Ipod is on Shuffle.

Please tell me I'm not the only one who does that? LOL
That's pretty much how I rate my albums. If I can keep it in there for a week or so without getting tired of it (I don't drive far distances often) then it's a good album for me. If I want to take it out after a day or two then it's not a good sign.

Haven't listened to LASERS yet, but I am coming in thinking it will easily be his worst album so I won't be too disappointed. I'm waiting for F&L 2 (if he keeps that name) which I would expect to be much better.

Well, I'll see how this holds up during travel for me, as I drive about 45 minutes to and from my internship 3 days a week. The whole Lasers album (no bonus tracks) and Japanese Cartoon's debut "In The Jaws Of The Lords Of Death", which I just downloaded today, will both fit on one disc. I'll bump it for awhile, and see how I like them both.

Re: Official Lupe Fiasco L.A.S.E.R.S. Thread

          Just finished listening to it.

trob already said it, but "underwhelmed" would be a great description of my feeling. It starts off strong, but I Don't Wanna Care Right Now and Out Of My Head are ****. Didn't like them at all and those were the ones that really stuck out to me as the label-influenced songs.

The album did pick back up after The Show Goes On though. Really felt State Run Radio, Never Forget You (John Legend is a pimp), and All Black Everything (the one song that reminds me of The Cool/ "no-label-interference-Lupe").

I'll be giving it another listen or two later tonight, but right now it's decent. The autotune didn't bother me, but at times the album did feel a little over-produced, I guess.

But yeah, I'm not surprised this is how the album turned out judging from Lupe's interviews and how much Atlantic played a hand in how things turned out. In the end, it's definitely not a bad album at all, but I feel it could have been much more if the label would have ****ed off and let Lupe do what he wanted to do.

EDIT: I should also clarify, I know I mentioned it a lot in this post, but I didn't mean to come off as it's solely the label's fault for the album being what it is. Some of it does fall on the artist as well and I don't mean to be giving out excuses here.

Atlantic only did two tracks on the album. The fans should protest again the re-shelve the album.

Which 2 and where did you hear this? From what I read they were a big influence on the album, but I could be wrong.

"The Show Goes On" and "Never Forget You" were given to him by the label, with the topics and such he was supposed to rap about also given to him.

His DJ said it on twitter this morning. As far as the two tracks Words I never Said is one cant remember the other.

Here's a good summary of everything:

I had to do ‘Show Goes On,’ that was like the big chip on the table. I had to do it and it had to be the first single if the record was going to come out. And then there’s ‘Never Forget You’ [featuring John Legend]—which is another record I had nothing to do with—which became another bargaining chip, like, ‘Yo, after ‘Show Goes On’ there’s going to be this other record that you had nothing to do with.’ And I know John Legend, he’s a cool dude. But it was just a record he had sitting around and Exec A or Exec B heard it, and they were like, ‘Oh yeah! We’re going to put this on Lupe.’ And it wasn’t like, ‘Hey Lupe, do you like this song?’ it was like, ‘You got to do this record.’

Well then, that's interesting, lol. I don't mind The Show Goes On, but I actually really liked Never Forget You.

So features like Trey Songz and MDMA weren't forced on him or anything?

I know, right? Never Forget You is one of my favorites, I'm a big fan of Legend, though, so that might have a lot to do with it.

Those were the two songs that, as it said, were really forced on him as in the label would only help him release the album if he did those two as his singles. There was definitely a lot more influence throughout the rest though.

One of the other quotes from that article I linked to really says a lot about his feelings on the album:

I know the sneaky business deal that went down behind this song, or the artist or singer or songwriter who wrote this hook and didn’t want to give me this song in the first place. So when I have that kind of knowledge behind it, I’m just kind of neutral to it like, ‘Another day, another dollar.’ As opposed something like The Cool, which is more of my own blood, sweat, and tears, and my own control. With this record, I’m little bit more neutral as to the love for the record.

I don’t like the process behind Lasers. The music is dope but I just don’t like the process. We were literally at the point where all this music was done except for a couple songs that we did after the protest. So the bulk of the album was done. And we were talking about shelving the album and going to another label, that’s where we were like, ‘If you put the record out, put it out. Either move on to another album or can it and we’ll do other records at another label.’ The business of it got solved. I’m happy for the fans, this is their album. This is the album that they fought for and that’s what made me do songs like ‘Words I Never Said’ and ‘All Black Everything.’

Gave it a listen and like I thought, it's his worst one yet. I'd probably say around a 7.25. For one, like Pack and others have said, it's way too short to have even a few average/bad songs. Outta My Head is easily my least favorite song. I felt like it wasn't going to be good going in though. Like I said earlier, I'm waiting on his next album which I think will have him return to songs like what were on The Cool and F&L.

Also even Lupe said he enjoys a 3rd of this album when comparing it to his other stuff. (Words I Never Said, Coming Up, Beautiful Lasers, and All Black Everything) I'd probably say those were my favorite songs as well.

After a full 2nd listen just now, Out Of My Head and I Don't Wanna Care Right Now are still garbage IMO. Break The Chain and Coming Up are meh. I could go either way on those 2 songs. The rest is all good though.

What's unfortunate is that on a 12 track album, almost half of the tracks are skippable to me.

Hopefully The Great American Rap Album is still coming out this year.

I'm disappointed from reading all the opinions on the album, even though I expected it to be average at best.

                                Have you listened yet?

It's not terrible by any means, just a little disappointing. Although when an album gets hyped up like this one did because of the unnecessary wait it had to go through, it's not likely to live up to expectations I guess.
