    Wireless 5.1 Headphones

Anyone have any advice or experience with these. My receiver died and instead of replacing, was considering ditching all the wires and just going with headphones. I'm find listening to TV speakers during the day and we rarely have people over to watch a movie or anything anyway.

Most of my movie watching is by myself at night, and gaming as well.

I looked at a Pioneer set on Amazon and these by Turtle Beach.

I'm leaning towards the Turtle Beach ones because they are RF and not line of sight like the Pioneer ones. Both do 5.1, Pioneer's actually have 3 speakers in the headphone as opposed to TB's only having 1.

I like the fact I can crank them up loud and not bother anyone. Plus I love the sound of music through headphones over a stereo anyway.

    Re: Wireless 5.1 Headphones

I have ther wireless 7.1 turtle beach head phones which were nice when I got them. I do sometimes get crackling in them which is very annoying when it happens. I'm not sure if its interference from another frequency or not.

Batteries was an issue, they wouldn't last too long. I had to get rechargeable batteries. Comfort level is ok, it does have pressure so it can get uncomfortable after awhile.

I watched tv but I game more often with these if I'm online. You can pretty much hear everything. When I was playing MW2, I can hear a step and know what type of ground your on if it was wood, metal and even how far you are. Definitely an advantage for shooters.

If you move up to the $300 range you have a tough choice between Sony MDR-DS6000 (something like that) and the Sennheiser RS180.

          Re: Wireless 5.1 Headphones

Thanks guys. So torn on this, also looked at sound bars, but I don't know. Just tired of having wires everywhere and not sure I want the big bulky receiver anymore in my living room. I did buy a HTiaB, which after 2 hours I returned, the Panasonic BT230. Got it from Amazon for $200, but just hated the lack of inputs on it, even though now I'm loving having all 3 HDMI's going directly into my TV and having them all with their unique settings.

So that's when the Sound Bar came into thought, but none of them sans the Sony or spending over a grand seem to get good reviews. I'm cold on the Sony as the subwoofer needs line of sight, and not sure with my set-up I can pull that off.

So that's where my headphones idea came in, but now even that, I don't know if it's worth it to pay $200-300 for headphones and then miss having surround at some point. LOL I know, I'm so confused too. LOL

I've spent the past two weeks researching this very issue.

The Pioneer headphones have build quality issues and the Turtle Beaches are a little gimmicky for the price.

Look into the Astro A30's (the full wireless system) or get the wireless Mixamp 5.8 with a pair of solid wired headphones like the Sennheiser 555's ($85 on Amazon)

The entire system will run you between $220 and $280, but I've read it is WELL worth it.

I'm not an audiophile by any means, but I'll do my best to answer your questions.

One more thing... The Astro set uses something called Dolby Headphone processing.

It processes sound in a way to simulate surround through a normal pair of over the ear headphones. It is not a gimmick and works the way many "surround" headphones don't.

IGN's review of the Astro's says they could distinguish sounds coming "behind" them in Call of Duty and raved about the effect.

The surround DSP implementations are very similar, Dolby, SRS CS, Yamaha Silent Cinema and the other various proprietary systems. Dolby is a good name and runs on low end hardware, which is why you see it a lot on so much low end stuff, but along with SRS CS (which is mostly found on computers) they are probably the least effective. The Yamaha Silent Cinema, combined with an adaptive DSP, is probably the second best headphone surround I've heard. The best is the Smyth Research Realizer, which is also going to set you back over 3 grand (but about half of that is a Stax electrostat headphone system) , but it has a slight edge on the Yamaha and also includes things like head tracking to move the audio if you move your head.

The hardware solutions are pretty meager, multiple speaker setups are trash and the S-logic system developed by Ultrasone is fairly interesting, but not a substitute if you need good surround for gaming, etc.

After a lot of going back and forth, reading reviews, talking to several friends and other forums, I went with the Turtle Beach X41's. Thanks for everyone's input.

The wireless with RF, 7.1 surround and overall build quality is what lead me to finally deciding on those.

Turtle Beach has the PX5 coming out soon (March 7th on their website), wireless along with bluetooth so it'll work with PS3...pretty much top of the line

Yeah, I saw those. Since I don't have a PS3, didn't really matter to me though. LOL

I just splurged on the Mixamp and Sennsheiser's this evening. Both should arrive next week!

Very true lol. Since I have both and want something that'll let me play at night without having volume nearly inaudible I think I'm doing that...

Good call on wireless, I've decided the wires would just drive me nuts lol

Yeah, that was my biggest hangup was having wires everywhere. I want to just put them on and play or watch a movie.
