    Torrent Users Beware

I was just at my parents house and my dad had received a letter from Comcast. My brother had d/l the movie Faster off of a torrent. It was mainly a warning for him not to d/l stuff again. Of course it came from Sony since their legal team's email address was on there if you had questions. It was tied to his IP as they traced it back.

    Anyone else have this happen?

I got a letter once for downloading Paranormal Activity and ever since I have made up a rule to follow by and have yet to receive anymore letters.

Basically, don't download movies that are still in theaters.

Was that letter sent from Comcast?

I've heard of movie companies intentionally putting out torrents in which they track... I've also heard stories of ISPs telling users to slow down their heavy downloading (usually through torrents) so that the value per byte stays up. If Netflix was caught doing that with DVDs, then why not Comcast, ya know?

To play Devils advocate .What about the invasion of privacy? Aren't they invading your privacy by looking at what you are downloading? Just wondering?

Nope, it was from Charter Communications.

And yes, I believe Charter was notified by the Movie company.

              Nope.......

When you cross state lines, which is what the internet does, it is federal offense. And under federal law, they have the right to watch what everybody does in the USA in the name of national security.

And the Patriot Act expanded their powers.

People been using that defense for a decade now and it always get thrown out of court and they are always found guilty.

The ISP isnt monitering what they are doing anyways, he got caught because he downloaded a file that Sony themselves put up to catch people with, they got his IP and sent a letter to his ISP who then forwarded it on to him basically.

Alright guys, he was looking for feedback on his specific situation, not to get ideas as to how to download movies illegally without getting caught so keep all those suggestions out of this thread or its getting locked.

Wow I didn't realize all that. Not to get political and dont take it that way but that's got a bit of a big brother feel to it. What was that movie where they monitored everyone like that ? Was it the net?

Thanks Chef for clearing that up. I do not need any advice on pirating movies, etc., I can do that on my own. LOL! I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this? It was just interesting for my dad to show me that letter today and wanted to see if other had experienced the same thing.

Never experienced it myself, but I know people who have received a similar letter for downloading a Sony movie.

After a couple of viruses from torrent sites, now if i want music i go to napster or itunes and movies, tv shoes it's itunes if its a program i have to have i will shell out the money for it or go to my cousin that has just about everything. i just dont want to take all the risk that there are out there for something as small as that. if i can't afford it i dont need it.

If you download over bittorrent you are sending your IP, indiscriminately, to every other person connected on that particular torrent (including movie studios or their representatives), there can be no expectation of privacy in that situation so there can be no invasion of privacy.
