Since that has never, ever, been a barometer of comparison in the history of movies, I am not understand how that would be "cooler"... other than trying to find a reason to complain about the 3D tax inflating some release numbers?

The only numbers ever really compared are the number of theaters... which is a record Avengers didn't set (it was 7th for widest opening - http://www.the-numbers.com/movies/records/)

Because gross $$$ depends on the price tickets were at the time. So a movie 10 years ago wouldn't stand a chance against a movie today. If you had the number of tickets sold it would be a great barometer of the success of a movie.

They still wouldn't stand a chance because of the increase in theater numbers and seating available these days.

I do get your point, though, and it would be cool to see actual ticket sale numbers.

Also, sadly, I agree that The Dark Knight Rises won't break this number because of the lack of 3D, and I don't see any movie sans potentially Avatar 2, breaking this record for the foreseeable future.

...and number of people able to see movies is dictated by the number of seats available, and disposable income, and the state of the economy and inflation and... where does it stop? The movies are created to generate revenue, if you want to be a stickler about it there are inflation-adjusted grosses at the link in my first post.

Counting tickets and using that as a basis of comparison has never been done that I'm aware of, probably a reason for that. How would that be cooler?

It'd be cool(er?) because then you could see how many people actually went to the movie, instead of just seeing how much it made.

Was reading that more than 50% of the Avengers tickets sold were 3D. Wow.

                I'm thinking DKR does.
I don't think either one will do it. Maybe Batman comes close but no way Spiderman does. Too many are seeing it as a reboot that is too close to the last Spiderman movies.

                  This.

We all know it doesn't happen. That's why it would be cool to see the number of tickets sold... Is there a problem with being curious about a number we don't get to see?

that makes sense then, the 3d prices are a bit higher than regular 2d

Can't wait to buy this on BR!

Yeah they'll never go tickets sold. Simply a marketing tool to put out headlines that they broke a record. I could be wrong but almost every year there's a broken record in the box office.

By me at least 75% of the shows were in 3D so I'm not too surprised.
