I didn't really have any interest in seeing this (not a big comic book guy and ever saw any of the stand alone movies) but my daughter (she's 10) said out of nowhere the other day that she wanted to see it.

So I'm going to pick her up early from school on Friday and go see it.

Should I go the 3D route?

Given the option to see it a third time I'd pass on 3D.

It's not animated or Titanic, 3D doesn't add much.

My fiancee hates 3D (gives her headaches) and it doesn't usually do much for me either so we passed. We enjoyed it just fine without 3D (like I find for most movies).

There's just so much fan service in this movie, and 3D tends to reduce the quality of parts of what you are watching... and you often need to be looking where it expects you to or things aren't in focus.

I thought it was pretty good. I didn't think it was great, but I'm sure not knowing much about the characters hurt my experience a bit.

I'll check out the next one.

Glad I waited to see this and not have to battle the screaming ankle-biters who were undoubtedly there the initial weekends.

I'm just wow'd that overall they pulled this off in tremendous fashion. It just blended so well and absolutely pushed the limit of the comic book-to-screen art. I came across one of those lame Yahoo critics comments talking about a meager storyline.... and that's just way off base.

I'd rather see an Inhumans movie. I think that they could be depicted more "realistically" than the above. I don't even think you need to tie them to the FF as they were introduced.

But as far as the Avengers movies..... would be lying if I didn't say that chills didn't come over me at various junctures. I grew up on my brothers Tales Of Suspense books and then got into many titles for quite a while, with I.M. always leading the way (I hope to God they never adopt that "nose" costume!). In fact I've recently framed groups of montages of my books and have this one in one of my frames that continues to be one of my favorites.

As far as what someone said earlier about following the Avengers from #1, the Hulk did not stick around much at all. I supposed Lee & Kirby decided that they just couldn't pull off the character combination because, keep in mind, the Hulk was a fairly young project at the time and his appeal was being more of a monster hero than something conventional.

Likewise. 3D is just not that cool. In fact, just from watching the movie in standard form, I knew where the 3D effects would be taking place (in fights when a guy gets tossed and comes to a halt, the dirt or rocks or sparks fly up at you... Cool at first, lame the 10th time.)

I don't know why Sony would be against letting Spider-Man show up in another movie but the rights stuff doesn't make much sense at all in general.
Basically Sony and Fox's movie rights to Spider-Man and X-Men/Fantastic Four/Daredevil are owned in perptuity, but that's contingent on them making movies every few years otherwise the rights revert back to Marvel. That is probably the biggest reason that right now Marvel absolutely hates Sony and Fox. They want they're characters back and both Sony and Fox are obviously content with hot shotting out films of these properties in order to keep them. Sony wouldn't allow Spider-Man to show up because of the relationship between the two companies, some people even feel that Marvel has been intentionally trying to sabotage Spider-Man and the X-Men in the hopes that Sony and Fox won't make money off them.

There are currently plans to reboot FF so unless Fox plans on giving the rights back to Marvel, I don't see how Marvel will be getting them back anytime soon unless the time frame is smaller than we know, but I doubt it considering they still don't have Daredevil back yet and he hasn't been seen on screen since his film in 2003.

I have a question regarding Blu Ray. When these blockbuster films do really well at the box office, does that translate to a later date release on Blu Ray?

Conversely, if the film is a flop does it get released quicker?

I believe I am correct but I've sometimes seen some surprisingly large films get released quicker than normal in this regard.

Some OSer help me understand how this works please.

It really depends on the studio. Lionsgate Films has a habit of releasing their films sooner (maybe in three months passing), while WB tends to go five or so months before releasing their titles.

Though you're right, things will also be movie-dependent as well as time-dependent. If you're approaching a certain season like Christmas, you might see some releases right before then for good measure. I would expect most films to release no later than four months after its theatrical run, but you can never be too certain. Waiting six to seven months for its release is a thing of the past.

I would expect this film to come out on Blu-ray in late September/early October.

Iron Man, Iron Man 2, and Thor (all May theatrical releases) came out on DVD/BluRay in September (late Sept for the Iron Man movies, early Sept for Thor). With the Success of Avengers, I'd expect late September.

EDIT: Looked it up, they already have a release date - September 25th.
