The series is set just after the Civil War and deals a lot with the building of the First Transcontinental Railroad (1863-1869).

Was just reading THIS article about all the troubles AMC is having of late and it sounds like the first impressions of Hell on Wheels have been very poor.

Pretty vague criticism of "Hell On Wheels"

.......one would hope, get future episodes (if not the pilot) of Hell on Wheels upgraded.

Because as it stands, if Hell on Wheels doesn't work creatively, ...........

The pilot was filmed about 8 months before episode 2, which seems unusual, but other then that I can't understand what they are basing their criticism on. We will find out soon.

Watched the premier, would have watched the second episode had they not killed off Ted Levine.

Agreed. It wasn't very exciting, but I don't think I was bored.

I'll watch the second ep and see how I feel. I actually found myself more interested in the guy building the railroad. The scene he takes away 100 shares; the scene when he expresses anger over the track being built straight. That guy had my interest.

Not sure I really care about this Confederate soldier avenging his wife.

I enjoyed the first episode and will continue to watch. Like any new series you have to give it time to build the characters. I was surprised how graphic some of the scenes were.

Yeah, and I like Colm Meaney a lot (although his Sinn Fein support gives me pause), and if it was just about his character I might have stuck around, but the rest of the contrived story was too much. Ted Levine made the rest bearable, but without the show just doesn't make the grade.

I love westerns so I wasn't going to miss this show for anything.
I enjoyed episode 1 even though it was slow (I've read ep2 is great).

But I can't help thinking that the main character should be a little more rough and bad@$$.
This is basically Josey Wales tale all over again.
And Josey Wales was a hardened man who was fair, but wouldn't take crap from noone.

The main dude is a bit too panzified and warm. I was hoping he'd be a bit more cold and calculated.

But I'll wait to see what ep2 has to say.
