HELP!! Any Mac gurus here? My Macbook Air is FUBAR'ed...

I haven't used my macbook air in about a week or so. I turn it on (by waking it up, it was already on) today at lunch and see a grey apple and little indicator moving around in circles. This goes on forever. So I try to reboot. Same thing. So I do some poking around on the net and try some other things. I try booting in safe mode by holding shift, I then get a little bar that fills up and then the same grey apple and wheel. So I try booting up with OS Snow Leopard disc. I get to a screen where I verify the disc, it says its fine. I repair anyway. No errors found. I run the verify disc parameters option and it finds a bunch of stuff that's mismatched. I repair and then reboot. Same little grey apple and spinner. So I boot back up with the drive and tell it to install OS Snow Leopard. 45 minutes later I come back and it's at the infamous grey apple again, LOL.

So just now I went back to the disk utilities and ran verify disc. It found all sorts of errors. It recommended I repair the disc. So I've begun the repair process. I'm now going to go drink some beer because this is giving me a headache.

My questions for mac gurus are as follows:

    1. Any more recommendations to try to fix it myself? If so, please be pretty clear as I'm not really Mac savvy..
    2. If I need to take it in to get it fixed where do you recommend I take it? Apple? Best Buy?
    3. For the future, once I get it fixed, what do you recommend I do to back it up most easily? I was going to just buy a Time Capsule but on Amazon there's a lot of people saying not to get them as they fail a lot.
    4. If I do get a Time Capsule, could I keep my Linksys running downstairs and just plug the Time Capsule into the switch I have upstairs for my Mac and iPad? I really don't want to reconfigure a router for my laptop/Xbox/PS3 downstairs as they are all running great so I was thinking about trying something like this idea..

Also, just one more thing. I really only use the laptop to surf the net while I eat lunch each day, I never download anything at all on it so it's probably not a virus (although I have it set to d/L updates so I wonder if an update was downloaded and f'ed it up). I also really don't have an issue with restoring it as it was when I first got it but I don't believe my laptop came with any restore CD (does anyone know if Macbook Airs do? If so, I'll look for it). At this point I just want a MBA that works.

Any insight is greatly appreciated before I do the walk of shame to the local mall, LOL

I'm not sure about the older Macbook Airs, but the one released last October comes with a USB drive that has the back up discs on it.

As far as troubleshooting goes, I'm not too familiar with it as I have recently crossed over to Mac.

I would strongly recommend just going to an apple store. Their genius reps will troubleshoot and diagnose your problem for free.

I had the infamous white screen/apple start up loading screen issue recently on my MBP and it turned out to be a faulty Hard Drive. Being that the Macbook air use flash drives this maybe the symptoms for similar problems... or maybe its the logic board. Either way i am just guessing from a recent experience.

Trust me, head over to apple. They are awesome. You could even just call apple care. Even if you didnt purchase the extended warranty their phone reps are really good about diagnosing your problem based on your description over the phone.

          Good Luck!

          Edit:
After doing a bit of research. It seems like you have a faulty HD. Or Flash Drive(s) whatever MBA uses. To be certain just hit up an apple store. I don't recommend Best Buy b/c they will charge you just to look at your device. Also, once you do find the problem (hard drive) i recommend just buying online (Amazon, Newegg, etc) MUCH cheaper than purchasing from Apple. You can just "youtube" the how-to videos on replacing what ever needs fixing.

briand (and everyone) thanks for the recommendation. I went to the Apple Store tonight and they said they'd look at it tomorrow at 5:30 for no charge. The guy says it does sound like the hard drive (SSD 64gb) may need replaced but he said it could also be a software issue. It seems like Safari works alright once I get logged in, it's just Firefox (the beta so maybe that's just that program) and the 20 minute login time that are fubar'ed now.

I found a site online that will upgrade my SSD hard disk to a 120gb SSD and transfer the data over to it for $150 so if it is the drive I'll probably just end up doing that.
